iFootpath - walking guides and directions for the UK

Welcome to iFootpath, a website and iPhone app to inspire people to get out and enjoy beautiful walks across the UK. From town trails to riverside strolls and countryside rambles, we are building a library of walks for everyone to enjoy - be it alone, with your dog or with family and friends. All iFootpath walks are available to print from the website or to download and take with you on the iFootpath iPhone App.

As recommended by The Telegraph (June 2013), Lonely Planet Traveller Magazine (April 2013), The Times (April 2012) and The Independent (January 2012).

iFootpath is still in its youth but it’s blossoming well. The latest iFootpath App update was launched in February 2013 including simplified registration and all the usual features. We are also still running our reward scheme – submit 10 miles of walks suitable for publication and we’ll send you a £10 voucher or donate £10 to charity on your behalf (for full terms and conditions read here).

Create and share walking guides including descriptions, GPS data, references, illustrations, images and comments

Like the fantastic countryside we have here in the United Kingdom, iFootpath is made for walking and helps you create and share walks, walking routes and descriptions. It will be like having access to a huge library of walking guides that you can download and print or, better still, download to your iPhone or iPod touch and take with you.

Walking routes in iFootpath can contain lots of information to help with the walk - they can contain detailed instructions on where to walk, images of the views to be seen, notes on historical aspects or natural history, things to look out for and much more. To create a walk you simply add what you think is relevant or interesting, a picture or two and share. Others can read it, download it, use it, add comments and further pictures to build up a rich collection of information about walks in the United Kingdom to allow anyone to browse, select, plan and follow great walks.

iFootpath is "location aware" and will display information based on where you are and where the walk is. For example, where iFootpath knows about a walk start point it will automatically sense this and display weather forecast information to help you plan your walking activities.

iFootpath Mobile allows you to take walks with you on a mobile device, no internet connection needed while walking

iFootpath Mobile puts shared walking routes and guides into your pocket to take with you when you walk and follow the walk on screen through words and pictures. You do not need an internet connection when walking as unlike some other services these guides are fully functional and complete on the device, so there's no hunting for an internet connection while out in the hills, just get on with walking. And gone will be the days when you have to collect books and pamphlets with walking guides for every part of the country you visit - just download the ones you want from the library.

iFootpath Mobile is available on the iPhone and iPod touch.

If you do not want to use iFootpath Mobile features then iFootpath also includes the facility to download files for transfer to your GPS device. Or you can use the old fashioned but perfectly formed method of printing guides to take with you!

Innovative use of technology to make creating, sharing and using walking guides simple and accessible

We have designed this site and the accompanying iFootpath Mobile application to utilise the latest technologies available. However, iFootpath is about walking, not technology and our goal is to make producing, sharing and using walking guides simple and accessible. We will not stand still and will develop features that will bring that goal closer.

There are other walking applications available, plenty of them. iFootpath aims to be different - this is not a website and application that just collects lots of GPS trail data (we can do that, but that's only a small part of iFootpath) but something that contains much richer information about the walks - descriptions, images, illustrations, GPS trail data and your insight into what makes those walks great.

Further features and functionality will be added over time and we're very keen for any feedback as you use both the website and mobile application. We would love to see iFootpath set the standard for sharing walking information, so please let us know what you think and how we can improve it.

Join the walking community

A bigger community will build a bigger and better resource that we can all share, and there are many ways in which you are welcome to participate. You can simply browse, select and download or print walks. But better still you can help build the walk database, contribute photographs and comments that will help refine walks.

If you are a walking group and want to share your walking routes with others, this is the place. If you are a commercial organisation offering walking tours you are welcome to share your walking routes here (but we would also like it if you could advertise with us!) If you write walking guides why not try them here first to get feedback from others before you commit to print and in doing so gain further exposure for your publications?

If you simply love walking and want to share and get more enjoyment from it, this is the place to be.

Made for walking!
