A 3 mile circular loop around the steep valley woodland of Cardinham Woods. The walk climbs gradually into the high valley sides to reach a view point over the river below, and then follows a gradual descent to return to the start point. Popular with dog walkers, the tracks give an excellent opportunity to enjoy beautiful isolated woodland.

The walk begins with a gradual but very long climb and the second half follows the equivalent descent. All the tracks are quite well made with stone/grass but can be just a little muddy after wet weather. There are no stiles or gates. There are toilets and a cafe available at the start. Approximate time 1 to 1.5 hours.

The walk starts from the Cardinham Woods pay and display car park. Follow the brown signs from the A38 Bodmin to Liskeard road, close to the Bodmin and the junction with the A30. Approximate post code PL30 4AL.

Walk Sections

Car Park to View Point
Car Park to View Point

Start point: 50.4696 lat, -4.6789 long
End point: 50.4749 lat, -4.6777 long

Cross over the narrow footbridge, next to the information boards, to reach the picnic benches, with Woods Cafe on the right. Follow the path as it swings left and then right to reach a vehicle barrier on the right. Pass alongside the vehicle barrier and take the left hand track signed as the Callywith Wood Walk.

Continue on this track climbing steadily uphill with a stream running to the left for some distance. Follow the path as it turns sharp right to continue its climb. Soon after the path levels off you will come to a fork. Take the left hand path onto the level track, ignoring the right hand fork which slopes steeply downhill.

Follow this path until you reach a viewpoint with a bench on the right. Take time to enjoy the view along the valley here, with Cardinham Water running at its base.

Follow the track as it swings left and then continue along this section of woodland ridge. After periods of rain you’ll be able to hear the stream rushing in the valley far below. Continue on this track as it still steadily climbs. As the path begins to climb steeper and swings sharp left you will reach the ridge point furthest north.

End point: 50.4714 lat, -4.6845 long

Follow the track as it continues to swing left into an area of deciduous woodland. A few paces later at the fork, keep right on the track as it climbs swinging to the right. Follow the path as it levels off winding through the trees and you will soon be able to begin the well earned steady descent. Follow the track as it descends to reach a T-junction with the level track you were on earlier.
