The third day of the Warwickshire Centenary Way (southbound), starting at Hawkesbury Junction on the Oxford Canal and ending at Coombe Abbey Country Park near Coventry. An easy paced walk offering several miles of gentle canal walking, attractive farmland, and quiet country lanes. There is a distinctly rural feel to this section but distant glimpses of the city of Coventry are never far away. There are a few stiles to negotiate once you leave the canal behind, and there are some fields containing livestock.

The walk starts at Hawkesbury Junction on the Coventry Canal, Hawkesbury, near Coventry. There is free parking on the road to the Greyhound Inn.

Walk Sections

Hawkesbury Junction to Mobbs Wood Farm
Hawkesbury Junction to Mobbs Wood Farm

Start point: 52.4571 lat, -1.47 long
End point: 52.4413 lat, -1.3778 long

Face the Greyhound Inn and then head left along the Oxford Canal. You will follow the canal towpath for approximately 4.5 miles, passing the cottages of Ansty along the way. The towpath is in good repair and there are no gates or stiles to negotiate. Every bridge you pass under is numbered, and after passing Bridge 16 beyond Ansty, look out for a high steel bridge spanning the canal ahead of you. Before you reach the bridge, take a way-marked path left leading up through bushes. Climb this path to reach the bridge and then turn left to cross it, walking over both the canal and a railway line. From here you walk onto the long cement driveway leading to Mobbs Wood Farm.

Mobbs Wood Farm to Colehurst Farm
Mobbs Wood Farm to Colehurst Farm

Start point: 52.4413 lat, -1.3778 long
End point: 52.4274 lat, -1.3716 long

Continue along the cement drive (farm buildings ahead right) until it bends to the right by a power pole. Leave the drive at this point and take the gate\stile into a field. Follow the left hedge along the field and then cross the field to reach a gate on the left corner of woodland (Mobbs Wood). Follow the grassy track, with Mobbs Wood on your right, through two further gates and enter a large field. Follow the fields’ right hand hedge around first corner, pass an oak tree mid-hedge, and then continue onto a second corner and two gates. Take the left hand gate and follow the right hand hedge around two corners, through a gate right, and onto a farm track. Follow the track to cross the M6 motorway to enter a large field. Follow the left hand hedge for approximately 400 yards to reach a way-marked gate left. Go through the gate and continue, now with the hedge on your right, to reach a second gate. Continue down a track with farm buildings to your left to go through a gate leading to a drive. Turn right along the drive to cross a railway bridge and reach a lane, with the buildings of Colehurst Farm on your right.

Colehurst Farm to Hillfields Farm

Start point: 52.4274 lat, -1.3716 long
End point: 52.423 lat, -1.414 long

Note: There is a section of road walking ahead on quiet B-roads where traffic is light.

Turn left and follow the lane as it bears to the right, crossing the Oxford Canal via a bridge. Continue along the lane to reach a T-Junction with Smeaton Lane. Turn right here to walk along Smeaton Lane. At the crossroads, continue ahead on Peter Hall lane before reaching a T-Junction with Combe Fields Road. Turn left here before shortly crossing the road to go through a gate at the sign for Hillfields Farm. Follow the cinder track for approximately 1 mile, with the Rolls Royce Aero Centre across fields to the right, before reaching the buildings of Hillfields Farm.

Start point: 52.423 lat, -1.414 long
End point: 52.4116 lat, -1.4068 long

Continue along the track as it performs an S-bend through the farmyard and then continues between hedges, through a gate, to climb to a second farm on the right. As the farm is reached, turn left at a way-marker to cross a field towards woodland. This is the edge of the Coombe Abbey Country Park. As you enter the woodland follow the bark track ahead, ignoring the first right hand path. Go right at the next junction and then head left to walk past some buildings and a pool. Take the path right by the stream, passing a timber bridge to your right, to cross the causeway before following the path to the visitors centre at Coombe Abbey
