This walk follows the Limestone Way from Matlock to Bonsall. In this direction it is a good climb out of Matlock and onto the Limestone Way and fields surrounding Masson Hill. The views of Matlock grow greater as you climb up the hill and soon get broader to see across Stanton Moor and towards Chatsworth and beyond to the gritstone edges and High Peak. Although a good climb out of Matlock the gradient eases off once past Geoff's Seat to become a gentle amble across fields until the village of Bonsall comes into view.
The path drops down into the village where you get a chance to see just a small part of it - although the most important part (church, well, cross and pub). The route then climbs out of Bonsall to Ember Farm before following the path through the glorious woods and above the Heights of Abraham and Matlock Bath before rejoining the path out of Matlock once again.
This walk takes you right past the entrance for the Heights of Abraham. There is no right of way through here so you will need to purchase an entrance ticket if you want to go in before continuing with the walk. This is a country park first opened in 1780 and has a variety of attractions for visitors including refreshments and of course the cable cars that can transport you from just adjacent to the railway station in Matlock Bath to the top and back again.
The first part of this walk follows the Limestone Way. This is a long distance route from Castleton in the Hope Valley to Rocester in the more gently rolling countryside on the River Dove. The whole route is waymarked and can be completed in 4 or 5 days. The section from Bonsall to Matlock is an extension or spur - you will need to return from Matlock to Bonsall again if walking the full Limestone Way.
The hillsides around Matlock and Bonsall are littered with old mine shafts; the area was once a haven for lead mining and the workings remain under the hillside. You will probably spot one or two shafts covered up. Under no circumstances be tempted to explore these!

There is plenty of parking in Matlock and it is also well served by buses and a train service from Derby. The closest car park to the start is adjacent to the railway station. It is pay and display so have some change with you. Approximate post code DE4 3NA.

Walk Sections

Matlock to Geoff's Seat

End: OS ref SK285594

Start point: 53.1372 lat, -1.559 long
End point: 53.131 lat, -1.5755 long

The route starts on Snitterton Road, just by the Royal Bank of Scotland building on the A6. Walk up Snitterton Road and just before the row of houses turn left to follow the path past Bridge Farm and up through the field. This climbs out of Matlock quite quickly and goes straight up the hill on a waymarked and well used route. You will go through or over several stiles until you get to a track that crosses in front of you. Immediately to the right is Geoff's Seat where you have earned a short rest to admire the views across Matlock.

Start point: 53.131 lat, -1.5755 long
End point: 53.1211 lat, -1.5846 long

From Geoff's Seat cross into the field following the sign and continue following the waymarked route to Bonsall. Bear right across the crest of the hill and keep left down the walled lane to drop down into Bonsall. This will exit by the cross in Bonsall.

End: OS ref SK291586

Start point: 53.1211 lat, -1.5846 long
End point: 53.1238 lat, -1.5666 long

Once you have looked at the cross turn immediately left to walk up and along Church Street. Immediately after the church there's a left turn up the hill to your left - Ember Lane. Follow the lane until you get to Ember Farm. There's a footpath sign in the yard as you get there and another two just further ahead straight on. Turn left at this sign to go through the woods towards Matlock.
This path follows a narrow path through the woods above the Heights of Jacob in Matlock Bath. There are one or two obvious mine shafts in the woods here - stay away from them even though they are covered! In the woods there's a path off to the left - ignore it and continue straight on sloping gently down until you pass the entrance to the Heights of Abraham. Cross the road and follow the path round the fence and then drop down the next field crossing over the path to the entrance - unless of course you want to divert into the park but you will need to pay the entrance fee.

Return to Matlock Bridge

End: OS ref SK296601

Start point: 53.1238 lat, -1.5666 long
End point: 53.1372 lat, -1.559 long

Follow the path down the field, following the waymarked signs passing Masson Farm on your right. Continue to drop down and the path comes out onto Cliff Road. Turn left. On your left is St John's Chapel. Immediately after the chapel is a walled path to the left - take this and follow around the back of the disused quarries. Through a couple more stiles you are brought out onto the fields above Matlock Bridge. This track rejoins the track we climbed up earlier to drop back to Snitterton Road and Matlock Bridge.
