Walk Sections

Stoneleigh to Kenilworth
Stoneleigh to Kenilworth

Start point: 52.3494 lat, -1.5187 long
End point: 52.3488 lat, -1.591 long

If you are starting in Church Lane then go through the churchyard and take the gate leading to the footbridge crossing the River Sowe. Do NOT cross the bridge but instead turn right along the track leading to a lane. Cross the lane to take an enclosed track opposite which leads to a field. Follow the right hand hedge of this field to cross into a second field. Head half left here to a stile that takes you onto a lane (B4115).

Turn right along the lane to the junction with the A46 and then turn left. Keep to the left hand side of the A46 for about half a mile until you cross a bridge and then (with care) a slipway. Look out for a stile left, down steps, after the slipway and take this to emerge onto a field. Follow the left hedge of the field, parallel to the A46, and continue across a second field to a stile. Turn right after the stile and head towards a house, take a small corner gate onto a track and follow this to a right hand bend. Leave the track via a stile and cross a field and a drive. Pass a house on the right and continue across a field to a stile in the hedge corner. Cross a stile and into the grounds of the Kenilworth Golf Club.

Note: Be careful crossing the golf course, not just to avoid interrupting games in progress but also to remain on the right route across the course as it is easy to get lost.

Go half left across a fairway and pass through a belt of trees. Cross a second fairway into a second belt of trees and then continue forward, following the line of the trees until you emerge with a green to your right. Follow the tree-line right, around the green, and then continue along with the fairway to your left and then exit the golf course via a track leading half right through the trees and onto an enclosed path (garden fencing on the right hand side). The path leads you to a road (Knowle Hill) which you continue along to reach a junction where you bear right to continue along Knowle Hill. Bear right again to walk down to Dalehouse Lane and then turn right to walk along for about 150 yards before turning left along Common Lane. After crossing a bridge turn left at the gate that leads into woods and follow the woodland path with a brook to your left for about a quarter of a mile, passing under a viaduct and past a footbridge to your left. The path leads onto a road (Lower Ladyes Hills) which you continue along with allotments to your left and some fine properties to your right.

When you reach a T-junction, turn left along Tanters Hill and then, at the next T-junction, turn right along Manor Road. Follow this road, as it bends to the left, all the way down to traffic lights. Cross the lights and continue forward on High Street until you reach the old bank on your left. Turn left here and walk down to St. Nicholas Church. Pass the church on your left and then, from its front door, walk ahead along a path lined with mature trees which bends to the left and towards the Abbey ruins. Walk under the arch and then turn sharp right. Walk forward to pick up a path crossing Abbey Fields and rising to a lane (High Street). Turn left to walk down Castle Hill road, passing thatched cottages on the left, and continue around to the right to the Queen and Castle Inn. Cross the road here towards the castle and take a small gate that leads you around the left side of the castle walls. Climb steps to reach a causeway and then turn left to pass the ticket offices for Kenilworth Castle.

Start point: 52.3488 lat, -1.591 long
End point: 52.3117 lat, -1.5963 long

Continue along the track and then turn right at the T-junction. Fork left to cross a cattle grid and then bear right to take a small gate. Follow a fenced path to a field and bear left on the track to pass in front of a house to the corner of the field. Turn right to follow the track past a small pool on the right and over a footbridge. Cross the next field half-left to a hedge gap and then take the gate\stile, moving on to cross a footbridge. Go right by a fence to cross the pasture with a farm on your left and go through the mid-fence gate ahead of you. Bear left to pick up the easily identifiable track that will lead you across open pastureland for just under a mile. Simply follow the waymarks as you pass through a gate\stile, a corner gap, and by a pool. The track ends at a gate leading onto Rouncil Lane.

Turn right along the lane for a few yards before turning left onto a concrete drive. Follow the drive for about a third of a mile before crossing a stile left. Continue ahead and cross a further stile onto rough pasture, bearing left to cross a plank and to climb to the corner of the field. Turn right to follow the hedge for around half a mile, through a kissing gate and stiles but ignoring two stiles to the left, until you reach woodland near to the Warwickshire Golf course.

Start point: 52.3117 lat, -1.5963 long
End point: 52.2872 lat, -1.5344 long

Follow the woodland path onto the Warwickshire golf course and join a track. Go right to a pylon and then bear right to follow a hedge, via a corner gap, to a field. Follow the right hand hedge of this field around to its far left hand corner and cross the stile. Take the track to the right hand side of the mound ahead of you and then bear slightly right towards the end of a brick wall across a field where you take the gate\stile. Head for the 4th power pole from the left and emerge onto a farm drive (Woodloes Lane).

Turn left along this drive and follow it for about two thirds of a mile until you reach the junction with the A429. Turn right along this road and walk along it for just under a mile, passing a traffic roundabout, over a canal, and over the crest of a hill, to reach a railway bridge. Just before the bridge turn right along Woodcote Road and at its end take the footpath (left of car park alongside iron railings).

After a quarter of a mile take the subway left under the railway and climb the tarmac path up to a road (Cape Road). At the end of the road, cross the junction and then turn first right and then next left to walk along Northgate Street. Follow this street down to the arch of St. Mary’s Church. Face the church door and go right. Cross High Street and then follow Castle Street to the timber framed Oaken’s House tea rooms. Walk left of Oaken’s House and then bear left onto Castle Lane to the junction of the A425.

Turn left to the pedestrian crossing, cross the road, and continue forward into St. Nicholas Park. Walk through the park to the bank of the River Avon and then turn left to follow the riverside path for 1.3 miles, walking under a railway bridge and then a canal bridge. Just after passing riverside apartment blocks leave the river at the road-bridge for the A445. Go right along the road, fork right, and continue for a quarter of a mile to a roundabout. Go right onto Prince’s Drive for a third of a mile to the end of a river bridge. Go left here under a railway arch to enter Victoria Park and follow the river Leam for half a mile (passing under a road bridge) to cross a footbridge. Head towards the band stand and then continue on to the entrance to the Royal Pump Rooms at Leamington Spa.
