A level circular walk from Fleet Dyke Moorings, South Walsham. If you are travelling by boat this walk can be started from the Moorings or if you are coming by car a car park can be found on the route.

Half the route follows a new flood defence bank on the river, the remainder follows a farm track back to the village. The St Benet's Abbey monastery ruins can be seen across the river on this walk as well as an abundance of wildlife. Marsh harriers are frequently seen on this walk so allow plenty of time if you enjoy bird watching. Barn Owls are common in the evening.

By boat, cruise to St Benet's Abbey on the River Bure, turn into Fleet Dyke which takes you to South Walsham Broad. There are two mooring spots on this stretch of river that you can moor at, the walk starts at the moorings close to the Broad and Boat Yard.

If you are travelling by car, go to South Walsham, the car park is at the road junction before the Russel Marine yard. Postcode for sat nav NR13 6ED.

Walk Sections

Start to Pumping Station
Start to Pumping Station

Start point: 52.676 lat, 1.508 long
End point: 52.6815 lat, 1.5276 long

From the moorings, turn left (heading downstream) towards the river mouth with the river on the left. Follow the path along the flood bank and when you reach the junction in the river, keep right with the water still to your left. On the opposite bank you will see the ruins of St Benet's Abbey. Continue until you reach the pumping station.

End point: 52.6718 lat, 1.5126 long

At the pumping station, turn right and go down the bank to reach the farm track (this is infrequently used). Follow the track, being careful as there are drainage dykes each side. You will pass through one gate, the track then becomes better walking. Follow the track and then, 60 metres after passing the first house on the Right, look out for a footpath sign usually hidden on the left. Turn Right.

Footpath Sign to Broad Lane

Start point: 52.6718 lat, 1.5126 long
End point: 52.671 lat, 1.5074 long

Turn right at the footpath sign and proceed along the path at the edge of the field. At the end of the field you will reach Broad Lane ahead.

Broad Lane to End

Start point: 52.671 lat, 1.5074 long
End point: 52.6759 lat, 1.5079 long

Turn right through the hedge here onto Broad Lane. Car Park can be seen on the left. Take the first right into Fleet Lane, and follow this all the way, going past the boat yard buildings to its end where you will find the moorings where the walk began.

very very muddy! completed in feb 2016 and measured 4.3 miles rather than 3. when you get to point 1 you have to open a metal gate which was in a bog. we missed our turn and had to backtrack as it wasn't obvious.
