The Usk Reservoir is in a remote area surrounded by forest and moor-land overlooking Mynydd Du or the Black Mountain. This is a 6 mile circular trail which winds its way around the reservoir.

The Usk reservoir can be found in the upper reaches of the Usk river valley. It is located 6 miles from Trecastle and is signposted on the Llanddeusant road. Explorer Map OL12 or Landranger Map 160 - SN 834 286.

Walk Sections

Start to stream
Start to stream

Start point: 51.9441 lat, -3.6988 long
End point: 51.9459 lat, -3.7208 long

Start in the car park. The walk can be done either in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction; heading in a clockwise direction means that many of the longer slopes will be downhill. This walk is described in the anticlockwise direction so therefore head over the bridge with the reservoir on your left, to start the walk.

End point: 51.9403 lat, -3.7245 long

The path is a mix of compacted-stone forestry tracks and tarmac roads which is easy to follow, however at one point the track heads up alongside a stream through a wooded area which can be quite muddy. At the top of the wooded area, the path rejoins a larger forestry track. Head left at the top and continue along the forestry track.

End point: 51.9354 lat, -3.7218 long

The path heads down here to the edge of the reservoir affording an excellent view and a good picnic spot.

From here continue to follow the forestry track through wooded areas. Further along, the path opens out and you will get an excellent view of Mynydd Du (The Black Mountain). Continue to follow the track back to the car park from where you started the walk.

Remember...the best way of following our walking guides is to use the iFootpath App (iOS and Android) where you will have all the information in the palm of your hand and see your exact location on the live map as you travel. You can also add comments, photos, ratings and track your own routes.
