A 3 mile circular pub walk from the Ginger Fox in Sturminster Marshall. A mainly level walk through undulating countryside and along the Stour Valley Way. Good views and birdlife make this a very pleasant ramble. Approximate time 60 to 80 minutes.

The walk starts and finishes at the Ginger Fox pub which is on the A350 (Blandford Road) near to the junction with Newton Road in Sturminster Marshall. Approximate post code BH21 4AQ.

Walk Sections

Start to Bridleway

Start point: 50.7981 lat, -2.0846 long
End point: 50.7947 lat, -2.1005 long

From the pub, turn left past the car park then walk along the pavement for 80 yards. Cross road with care and turn right down lane signposted to Almer.

Follow lane and after 300 yards, pass Newton Farm to right. 200 yards on, pass entrance to Newton Peveril Manor on right. Continue along lane for 900 yards and turn right at bridleway sign.

Start point: 50.7947 lat, -2.1005 long
End point: 50.803 lat, -2.0904 long

Follow track between hedges and fields. After 200 yards, pass between trees and continue ahead. The next 80 yards may be soft underfoot in places. Head gently uphill for 250 yards then, 10 yards before track bends to right, turn right.

Follow grass track between hedges. After 80 yards, pass large metal gates to left and right. Continue on track gently uphill. After 200 yards, pass under power cables and track heads gently downhill. 500 yards ahead you will reach the A350 main road.

End point: 50.8034 lat, -2.0866 long

Cross road with care and continue ahead on concrete track passing pumping station to right. After 150 yards, turn right at bridleway sign, passing through metal gate.

Follow narrow path with fence and paddock to left (take care with brambles and nettles). After 150 yards, path bends to left. Pass through metal gate and enter field 15 yards ahead.

Start point: 50.8034 lat, -2.0866 long
End point: 50.7975 lat, -2.083 long

Bear right and walk along right edge of field. Running parallel just to the right is path of the old Dorset & Somerset rail line. 400 yards ahead, path enters spinney (some sections may be soft underfoot). 150 yards on, path heads gently downhill and 120 yards ahead, path curves to left. Follow for 100 yards and, with metal gate and fence ahead, turn right on to tarmac drive.

Follow for 250 yards into Sturminster Marshall and turn right at T junction on to road. Continue past houses and gardens. After 200 yards, King Street becomes Newton Road. Continue ahead for 600 yards to the road junction. Turn right and head along the pavement. It’s just 130 yards back to the Ginger Fox for some well deserved hospitality!
