|Author: witneyman, Published: 17 Apr 2016||Walk rating : Rating:|
A circular walk from the Cotswold Village of Stonesfield passing North Leigh Roman Villa and traversing part of Blenheim Park.
The walk has several climbs and descents throughout. Some sections can get muddy and the path under the railway bridge can be flooded after periods of rain. You will need to negotiate a few stiles (including two ladder stiles) as well as kissing gates.
The walk starts from Church Street in Stonesfield, Oxfordshire. Parking is available on the street. Approximate post code OX29 8QU.
Start to Roman Villa
Start point: 51.8512 lat, -1.4294 long
Walk south down Church Street. Where the road bears right (to become Church Fields), go straight ahead onto Brook Lane. Continue ahead, along the lane and then track, until you reach the river. Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead. The path becomes a track and passes the entrance to Lower Riding Farm. Carry straight on and cross a railway bridge. Take the first footpath on the left to reach North Leigh Roman Villa.
Roman Villa to Footbridge
Start point: 51.8365 lat, -1.4262 long
Go through the gate to the left of the Roman Villa, turn right and follow the footpath towards the river. Go under the railway bridge. (WARNING: after heavy rain the section of path by the river under the railway bridge can become flooded). Continue for approx 100 metres (with the river now on your right) to reach a footbridge crossing the river.
Footbridge to Combe Green
Start point: 51.8385 lat, -1.4223 long
Cross the bridge and turn right up a slight incline to reach a kissing gate. Pass through this and continue straight ahead along the track to reach the village of Combe. At the first junction keep right on through West End (ignoring Chatterpie Lane on the left) and continue straight on, ignoring other turnings to reach the T-junction. Turn left and follow the road swinging left until you reach Combe Green on your right.
Combe Green to Left Turn
Start point: 51.8404 lat, -1.4033 long
Fork right immediately before the green, passing along the road (signed to Combe East End) along the right-hand edge of the green. Beyond the green, keep ahead onto Park Road, passing a path leading to the church on your right. Continue past houses on the left and a playing park/cricket field on the right. Continue past the last house on the left and, within a section with open fields each side, take the footpath on the left.
Left Turn to Blenheim Park
Start point: 51.8418 lat, -1.395 long
Continue on the footpath (across the fields and through woodland) until you reach Blenheim Palace's Great Park. Enter the park via a step ladder over the wall. Turn left and follow the footpath signs through the estate.
Blenheim Park to Oxfordshire Way
Start point: 51.8548 lat, -1.3864 long
Follow the footpath signs until you reach the tarmac avenue flanked by two lines of trees. Turn left and cross a cattle grid. Immediately before a second cattle grid turn left onto the Oxfordshire Way.
Oxfordshire Way to End
Start point: 51.8614 lat, -1.3814 long
Follow the track and exit the park via another ladder over a wall. Continue along the Oxfordshire Way (straight ahead, crossing a few roads along the way) for some distance until you arrive back at the river. Pass through a gate and turn right to retrace your steps along the track and lane to the starting point.

I want to congratulate you on your web site/app performance, quick, reliable and easy to use. I have similar walking apps with OS Maps and ViewRanger but yours is best.
This app has totally changed my life, i absolutely love it. I did this walk yesterday, what a beautiful walk it is, i thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely do it again, in fact i met an older gentleman who was on his 100 and something time there!! My sister and daughter cant wait to come along. The noise mentioned about the motorway is negligible and for me did not detract from the overall walk at all, the view from the top was stunning!!
So far I have downloaded 5 walks and completed 3 of them, tomorrow will be No 4. I love your website The walk descriptions are the best I have used in the last six years of rambling since I retired. This is a website I would be more than happy to pay a subscription for, instead I'll donate a sum to my favourite charity. THANK YOU.
Have deleted Pokemon Go and downloaded @ifootpathuk which is much more 'me'
I love the illustrated descriptions of each walk section. Really helps to enjoy the walk and get to know something about what I'm seeing. So much better than apps that only provide GPS co-ordinates and no photos or description. Love it!
After trying out numerous other apps I came across this one: way ahead of any of the others in every way. Much more accurate and very easy to use with great features. Would highly recommend it as THE app to use for walking.
Just wonderful, with walks for everyone: the fit, the not-so-fit, short walks, long walks, through woods, up hills (and down).
I highly recommend it, as my mum and I use it to go for walks and finish by eating at a pub. Its detailed and sometimes humorous instructions lead us easily to our destination. Also, to top this, it has interesting facts about the area we're walking in
I don't review much but this app deserves it. Downloaded some really good walks and the combination of the good descriptions and the really useful map of the walk showing where you are make it a brilliant tool. Well done and keep up the good work.
Very enjoyable and well described route. Views over the river from the warren were stunning.
Fantastic walk and amazing views. Great directions though I followed the GPS map mainly
Great walk, instructions were very detailed, perfect!
This may be the best walk I've ever done. It was certainly the best directions.
Even on a cold windy day with it trying to snow this was still an excellent walk. We managed it with our 2 children of 5 yrs and one in a all terain pram (a defo no no with a normal pram). Will be doing this one again in the summer.
Used app while visiting (it was great!)--live in Texas. Thanks!
Your app and walks are a dream to use
Did this walk this morning with our three little girls and we all love it. Great day outdoor!
