This route takes in several of the highlights of Kinder Scout - the Woolpacks, Noe Stool and of course Jacob's Ladder (part of the Pennine Way). The views are of course extraordinary once you have gained the height to look across a vast amount of the Peak District from it's highest mountain.
On a day with good weather this walk is wonderful as you walk up the path of Crowden Brook and then up to the Kinder Scout plateau. However, on days where there is mist, cloud and rain it's a very different proposition and calls for the correct clothing and navigation to avoid problems.

The start point for this walk is the small car park near Upper Booth. Take the road from Hope through to Edale and continue until you reach the village of Barber Booth. Approximate post code S33 7ZL. There's a right turn onto a minor road to Upper Booth and go under the railway bridge and park in the lay-by on the left.

From the lay-by walk along the minor road into the (tiny) village of Upper Booth. This is now owned by the National Trust but remains a working farm operating to strict environmental standards. There is also a great campsite here and highly recommended.

Once you have crossed the bridge over the River Noe in Upper Booth, take the footpath to the right that follows to the left of Crowden Brook through the trees. You will enjoy this on a clear and sunny day with the water flowing down the brook, the sunshine through the trees and the view up Crowden Clough and Crowden Tower emerging as you walk along the path by the stream. Cross over the wooden footbridge and you will emerge from the trees into more open moorland with the stream as your constant companion.
The path hops across the stream on several occasions and starts to climb more steeply towards Crowden Tower. If there is little water flowing you can get to the top by scrambling up the rocks, but an alternative is the path to the left side that will bring you out on top.

End point: 53.3798 lat, -1.8707 long

Once you have reached the top turn left to Crowden Tower. This is at 619m above sea level, not quite the highest point on Kinder Scout which is the nearby Crowden Head at 632m (directly north of Crowden Tower).
If you have a clear day the views from here across to Rushup Edge and Mam Tor, down the Vale of Edale are sensational, but it has to be said that it is often hazy, misty or cloudy! Kinder Scout can be treacherous in low cloud and fog as anything apart from the walks around the top of the plateau are difficult to see and good navigational skills are needed - the peat bog and groughs making it very difficult to navigate by anything but compass (or maybe a good GPS).
Now continue on the path that swings round the perimeter of the plateau towards the rocky formations known as the Woolpacks. The rocks here have been weathered into all sorts of shapes and several have been given names - the Moat Stone, the Pagoda and the Pym Chair being just three.

Continue on the perimeter path passing the Noe Stool and keeping the rocky summit of Swine's Back on your right. You will get to a wall and paths crossing. Our route turns left and descends once again via the Pennine Way and Jacob's Ladder.

End point: 53.3717 lat, -1.8692 long

Follow the obvious path all the way down to the valley floor. This path was reconstructed by the National Trust in the 1980s and is part of the Pennine Way. This will take you down to Yongate Bridge over the River Noe.

The path continues along the track past Lee Farm and out onto the road to bring you back to the lay-by near Barber Booth.

Great walk, steep in places and a bit soft on the tops (March). Stunning views.
