A circular woodland walk of just less than 3 miles through a beautiful section of the New Forest called Acres Down near the tiny village of Minstead, north of Lyndhurst in Hampshire.

The walk follows wide, well-made gravel tracks and all the slopes are quite gentle making it fairly easy walking. There are no gates or stiles. As part of the New Forest, Acres Down does have free roaming ponies so you’re likely to come across some of these both in the car park and throughout the walk. To reach the car park you will need to drive through a ford. Approximate time 1 to 1.5 hours.

Free parking is available for the walk in the small Forestry Commission Acres Down car park. The area has lots of tiny lanes so better to use a map to plan your route rather than relying on Sat Nav! The car park is accessed from Forest Road (near Newtown, between Stoney Cross and Emery Down) and the small access lane is signed Acres Down ¼ mile. Follow the small lane through the ford (note this can be quite deep after heavy rain) and past the Acres Down farm shop on the left. Fork right to follow the short section of lane to the entrance gate for Acres Down – the car park is on the left. Approximate post code SO43 7GE.

Walk Sections

Car Park to Grass Crossroads

Start point: 50.8864 lat, -1.621 long
End point: 50.8868 lat, -1.6284 long

To start the walk, go straight ahead past the low level gate and with the marker post signed for Bolder Wood. Follow the path gradually sloping downhill. As it levels off at the bottom follow it round two sharp bends - first to the right and then to the left.

A few paces later take a right turn down another wide gravel track. As the track begins to climb again, follow it as it bends to the left, ignoring the fork going straight on. Continue up the gentle climb and you will soon come to a wide grass path crossing over the main track.

End point: 50.8836 lat, -1.64 long

Continue straight ahead here on the main track. Follow the path first along a short straight section and then as it snakes first right and then more sharply to the left. Continue over another grass crossroads and then follow the track as it continues to snake through the woodland for almost a mile. Eventually you will come to a five ways junction of tracks with views over the valley to the right.

End point: 50.886 lat, -1.622 long

Continue straight on here along the main track. Follow the track gradually sloping downhill. At the bottom of the hill you will reach a T-junction with another track. Turn left here. Follow this main stone track for a mile, ignoring all the smaller tracks off to the left and right, all the way back to the car park.

After your walk you may wish to visit the lovely village of Minstead, one of the most visited but least spoilt in the New Forest. The village has lots of thatched cottages and pretty lanes, a village shop plus a great dog friendly pub, The Trusty Servant. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s grave is under a large tree at the back of the 13th Century village church.

Easy walk on cycle path and over a stream. At the other end you come to a Canadian memorial. Cross the road you can walk to Bolderwood and to the deer sanctuary.
