Bay Villa Bed & Breakfast Cumbria - Simply a Nice Place To Be

There are few rules at Bay Villa. You can enjoy breakfast at a time to suit you and it will be served personally in your room. The bacon and sausages will be from Stuart Higginson's own pigs, the eggs will be free range from Sizergh, and the bread will be organic from the bakery just round the corner. The Slow Life ethos is integral to Bay Villa. The aim has been to get as far away from the corporate house style as possible. Visitors to Bay Villa often remark that it seems like a tardis because the modest front door gives no indication of the magnificent interior. The bedrooms have lots of space giving you plenty of room to relax and everything around is designed to be both beautiful and useful. 'Beauty and utility' are our watchwords, because we haven't forgotten the things that make modern life easy, such as a fridge, flat screen TV and free wireless internet.

Grange-over-Sands is one of the few Slow Life towns left in England. It has lots of old-fashioned artisan shops, two of which have won awards for being the best in England.

Grange is the only part of the Lake District with a reputation for mild, warm weather, but don't be surprised if you are so seduced by the Slow Life at Bay Villa that you never want to leave your room.

About Bay Villa

Visitors to Bay Villa often remark that it seems like a tardis because the modest front door gives no indication of the magnificent interior.

When Cumbria’s most famous architect Francis Webster designed the house in 1820 it was the grandest in Grange-over-Sands. This was before the railway was built and its gardens extended to the shoreline; they were famous for their walnut trees whose roots were lapped by the shore. Just beside the modest front door is a plaque written by the civic society which tells something of the history of the house.

The three best rooms in the house have been made available for Bay Villa’s guests. They are special, even by the standards of the time with a spaciousness and sense of luxury, rarely found.

Grange’s Unique Micro-Climate

"The romantickness of the place, the extraordinary healthiness of the Air, the fine variety of Prospects, combine to entertain the Fancy with pleasant Ideas, exhilarate the spirits, raise the sluggish circulation, brace the languid Nerves, and restore the Health without Physic, or Waters, and what may we not expect where we have the last added in Perfection". T. Short, "An Essay towards a Natural, Experimental and Medicinal History of Mineral Waters” 1740.

Grange has a mild and sunny micro-climate which sets it apart from the rest of the Lake District. Its abundance of palm trees and other tropical plants have earned it the nickname of "The Riviera of the North". Grange first began to develop as a health resort because of its thermal springs and several grand and palatial Hydrotherapy Spas were built. At its heyday in Edwardian times Grange was famous as a place to go in winter, and the guide books were at pains to point out that its reputation for being too hot to visit in summer was misplaced:

“The idea that Grange is only a winter or early spring resort, and that in summer it is extremely hot and enervating, is very erroneous, as in the warmest weather there is always a refreshing breeze blowing gently in from the open expanse of the estuary, and its ozonic properties are most relaxing.”

Simply a Nice Place To Be

It’s difficult to know how to describe our new B & B; ‘up-market’, ‘luxurious’ ‘beautiful’ are phrases which have been suggested, but one word which undoubtedly applies is ‘photogenic’. Hence this video, which uses some of the images taken by local photographer Mark Gillow.
