About the Local Area
Askrigg is a Yorkshire Dales village of character. With its tall three storied houses, leading up the sloping street from St. Oswald’s Church, which itself has origins as far back as the 12th century. You may already be familiar with Askrigg, as it was the fictional village of Darrowby, featured in the television series “All Creatures Great And Small”. Other local attractions have also featured on the big screen, such as Bolton Castle and Aysgarth Falls – with three waterfalls in total. They were used to film scenes for the box office hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.
Mill Gill Force is another spectacular local waterfall, about three quarters of a mile to the north-west. Its waters pouring down around 25 feet into a steep rocky ravine hidden in woodland. The waterfall can be reached by a 15 minute walk from the village centre. And a short drive from the village, is Hardraw Force, England’s highest unbroken waterfall. Comprising a single drop of 100 feet!
A fine market cross stands in the centre of the village, testimony to the market charter granted in 1587. Footpaths from here allow you to wander with ease through this area of outstanding natural beauty.
The country’s turbulent past is also represented in the Dale. Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in nearby Bolton Castle and Richard III spent several years of his childhood at Middleham Castle. Situated in Upper Wensleydale, in the heart of ‘Herriot Country’, between Leyburn in the East and Hawes in the West, Askrigg really is ideally placed for exploring Swaledale, Wharfedale and all of the Dales National Park. And why not visit the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes to sample some of the world famous Wensleydale Cheese, a favourite of Wallace and Gromit.
At Milton House our aim is to provide you with a relaxing & memorable stay at our Victorian Guest House, here you can sample everything that Askrigg and its beautiful surrounding areas have to offer.
