YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is a totally refurbished Victorian gothic mansion and cobbled mews set in formal gardens and 27 acres of parkland in the heart of the Peak District National Park. There are beautiful gardens, woods and streams to explore within the grounds with one of the peak’s most popular and charming tourist villages on the doorstep. If you fancy returning to the wild (with a few home comforts), our lovely new camping barn is a cosy alternative.
YHA Castleton is close to the spectacular Winnats Pass, Peveril Castle and Mam Tor; a great base for families and for activity breaks with superb walking, climbing, running and cycling all around. The best way to get a great view of Peveril Castle and the village of Castleton is to scramble up Cave Dale and look down on both! There are four spectacular show caverns, two castles, shops and beautiful scenery to explore in Castleton – perfect for any kind of visit. And, if you love history, there are loads of fossils around and they’re easy to find - we’ll even tell you the best places to look.
FREE WI-FI available in communal areas for guests!
The hostel has 146 beds in 36 rooms, most of which have en-suite facilities. YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is finished to a high standard and boasts a licensed bar and luxurious social areas. There is plenty of comfortable furniture to relax on and gorgeous finishing touches like a woodburning stove and atmospheric candles.
The West Mews with its 28 beds in 7 rooms can be booked exclusively for your group, it has its own kitchen and lounge so is completely self contained.
Our camping barn is now open and available for hire. Heating and cooking is done via a wood-burning range stove, which makes the place really cosy. The stove is also great for baking - it makes lovely bread! There's also an electric kettle, a microwave and lighting so you've still got some home comforts. You'll also find hot water, a hot shower and two toilets. The six beds are on a mezzanine sleeping platform, accessed by a ladder, and can be arranged as two doubles and two singles or six singles.
In winter the barn is accessed on foot from the car park, so bring your boots and a torch as the (3 minute) walk takes you through our Magic Wood and over a stream by the Waterwheel Bridge. By the summer we hope to have a parking area right by the barn, but for now we’ve reserved a couple of parking spaces in the main car park.
The barn has been renovated using recycled materials with timber from our own woodlands (a mix of oak, ash and sycamore). Our cosy interior has antique leather armchairs, the world's only ‘rocking stool’ and there is a big picnic bench outside for sunny days and peaceful nights. There is no Wi-Fi and little phone signal but there are wonderful starlit skies, wild flowers, badgers, birds and bats for entertainment.
Please note that camping is sold per person and not per pitch and so, during the booking process, you will need to select the number of people that you wish to camp.
YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is a simple, peaceful campsite a good distance from the main hostel. It is a pleasant level field with tree shelter around the edge and is accessible via a gravel track. There are three showers and toilets on the field and a cold water tap. There is no lighting which makes it a great place for stargazing at night but does mean you'll need to bring a torch for the darker evenings. Currently there is no electricity hook-up on the field.
All the hostel facilities (bars, lounges, restaurant, self-catering kitchen, wash up sinks, etc) are available and free to use for camp site users but please note that they are 200m walk away, through the woodland dell. You can order a great cooked breakfast or any other meals in the hostel to save yourself from cooking. We have a great coffee machine too, so if you need an espresso to fire you up in the morning just stroll across Waterwheel Bridge. For later in the day we are also your nearest pub with a range of beers, wines and soft drinks for you to enjoy or take back to your tent. We run kids activities each morning throughout the school holidays (archery, animal feeding, etc), just ask at reception for more details. We also have a wealth of information about things to do in the area and where the best walking routes are so come and chat to us for inspiration.
You can drive right on to the field and park your car by your pitch. The gate is wide enough for all normal cars and camper vans. Access means the site is not suitable for caravans. Call at the hostel reception for the key code and directions.
This is at the main YHA hostel reception so come there first and we’ll give you the key code and directions so you can drive round onto the site. The reception is open all day from 7:30am to 11:00pm. You can check in from midday and this is also check out time. If you are arriving/leaving earlier just contact us – as long as there is space we are always happy to be flexible.
The site is a little walk away from the hostel through our lovely grounds so bear this in mind and bring a torch for walking back to your tent after a night at our bar. Be aware that there is another caravan site at the bottom of our drive called Losehill Caravan Site, this is not our site. Come to YHA Castleton Losehill Hall and check in at the main reception.
The camping field is fenced and enclosed but our grounds are extensive and include woods, streams and grazing animals so children should be supervised at all times.
