YHA South Downs is a refurbished Sussex farmhouse and barn buildings in an enviable location right on the South Downs Way, just a short stroll along a country lane from Southease Railway station. The buildings themselves are packed full of original features - you might visit the disused dairy farm or be lucky enough to have a stone window setting in your room! Surrounded by the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, the site stands in extensive grounds, ideal for exploring by experienced or budding naturalists – or just a place to relax and unwind.
Opened officially by the Queen in October 2013, it’s a great base for cheap family breaks close to traditional Sussex towns such as Lewes or Newhaven, which also has ferry connections with continental Europe. The culture of Brighton is also not far away and the great outdoors of the South Downs National Park is right on your doorstep.
Just 25 minutes on the train from Brighton and only an hour and a half in total from the centre of London, YHA South Downs is a wonderful rural retreat for city slickers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. There is a small laundry room with a coin operated industrial washing machine and tumble dryer plus a separate drying room with plenty of hanging space.
If you love the great outdoors but not the elements that come with camping, these pods could be right up your street. We have four wooden pods which are heated and include beds, futons and bedding. Two Standard Pods sleeping three (on futon beds) and two Large Pods sleeping four (on a double futon and 2 single beds) are available in the grounds of this hostel and guests in these pods will have access to all the Youth Hostel's facilities. Each pod has an individual decking area which is perfect for having a disposable BBQ!

Get all the fun of camping but without any of the set up stresses with these beautiful bell tents - part of the YHA Glamping experience. These spacious tipi-like tents are fully kitted out with a double futon bed and three single futons plus all bedding and can sleep four/five people. They also have eco-friendly solar lighting and comfy bean bags for you to chill out on during the day plus bedside tables, a coffee table, rugs and soft flooring.
There are two bell tents available at YHA South Downs which are available to book throughout the year for stays between Easter and the end of September.
Hire the whole place
This hostel is occasionally made available for hire on an exclusive basis. This means that you can have the place to yourself and choose how many of your friends, family, club mates, etc., join you. We allocate availability for exclusive use in blocks, typically up to 90 days in the future. If you are looking for space to stay with us on a normal shared basis, and can’t see any availability three months or more into the future, then this hostel may be being held for Exclusive Hire. A hot and cold buffet breakfast is served every morning to kick start your day. Choose from a continental or a full English - we serve from 7:30am until 9am. Breakfast is now available at 10% off - ONLY WHEN PRE-BOOKED (in-hostel price: £5.25). Simply add it to your basket at check out to save!
We can provide a packed lunch including a freshly prepared sandwich, a delicious cake, cereal bar, a bottle of mineral water, a packet of crisps and a piece of fresh fruit. Eat in the hostel or take your packed lunch with you to enjoy during your day of exploring.
The Courtyard Café
The Courtyard Café provides a relaxed atmosphere for you to unwind after a long walk or to catch up with friends - it's open to the general public as well as guests all year round from 10am until 4pm. From homemade cakes to coffees to hot meals, this cafe has it all.
This hostel offers the YHA Supper Club menu. This is a three course meal served at 7pm and sold at a set price. Guests in the Youth Hostel and the public will have the opportunity to all sit around the table together and share stories with their fellow travellers - this is the authentic hostelling experience!
Kids Eat Free
One free children's meal is available per adult main meal from the main menu when purchased at the same time. This offer is not available on breakfast.
We're licensed to sell alcoholic drinks so relax in the sun with a pint or a glass of wine. Try our Cakeaway offer for just £3 - a big slice of cake and a lovely hot drink of coffee, tea or hot chocolate to enjoy.
YHA South Downs has plenty of equipment if you want to cook for yourself or your family. We have two ovens with two sets of hobs, two fridges, one freezer, a toaster, two kettles, a microwave and lots of pots, pans and cutlery to dish up with.
As well as our café and dining room, we have an outside terrace with wooden tables and chairs which are great for al fresco dining when the weather is fine.
