This quiet spot is close to some fabulous walking and cycling holiday routes and spectacular views. Set in the South Downs National Park, just inland from coastal towns of Shoreham, Brighton, Hove and Worthing, the hostel provides modern accommodation, ideal for family activity breaks and school trips, plus a pleasant open garden well away from busy roads and cycle hire - great for exploring the South Downs on two wheels. After a makeover in 2015, this comfortable hostel has never looked better.

The Hostel

YHA Truleigh Hill has a total of 56 beds, available as dorms or private rooms. After a great makeover to our communal areas in 2015, our transformed hostel looks better than ever. With fresh carpets and a redecorated dining room, feel free to pop in and join our friendly community for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. We've also redecorated our toilets and showers and introduced Wi-Fi connectivity, so there's no reason not to pay us a visit! Cycle hire is now available at the hostel, so why not explore the South Downs on two wheels?

Bell Tents

Get all the fun of camping but without any of the set up stresses with these beautiful bell tents - part of the YHA Glamping experience. These spacious tipi-like tents are fully kitted out with a double futon bed and three single futons plus all bedding and can sleep four or five people. They also have eco-friendly solar lighting and comfy bean bags for you to chill out on during the day plus bedside tables, a coffee table, rugs and soft flooring.

Bell tent guests have access to the toilets, showers and self-catering kitchen inside the hostel.

Please note: these bell tents do not contain woodburners.


Please note that camping is sold per person and not per pitch and so, during the booking process, you will need to select the number of people that you wish to camp.

The YHA Truleigh Hill campsite is situated on the beautiful South Downs way with magnificent views across the English Channel as well as the surrounding countryside. A quiet location close to Shoreham by Sea and Brighton, Truleigh Hill is being earmarked to become another nature reserve in the future. Popular with Duke of Edinburgh Award groups, this campsite is equally suitable for organised groups and families.

Guests have 24 hour access to shows and indoor toilets and there is also an external toilet close to the camping area.
Guests also have access to a self-catering kitchen, lounge and dining room from 7.30am until 22.30pm.
Disposable barbecues are welcome.

Check in is from 5pm and check out is before 10am.

Hire the whole place

This hostel is occasionally made available for hire on an exclusive basis. This means that you can have the place to yourself and choose how many of your friends, family, club mates, etc., join you. We allocate availability for exclusive use in blocks, typically up to 90 days in the future. If you are looking for space to stay with us on a normal shared basis, and can’t see any availability three months or more into the future, then this hostel may be being held for Exclusive Hire. Come and enjoy a hot cooked breakfast before your day adventuring - it's served from 7.30am until 9am and includes all your favourites. Choose from sizzling sausages, crunchy cereal and all the toast and butter you can handle. Breakfast is now available at 10% off - ONLY WHEN PRE-BOOKED (in-hostel price: £5.25). Simply add it to your basket at check out to save!


We can provide a packed lunch including a freshly prepared sandwich, a delicious cake, cereal bar, a bottle of mineral water, a packet of crisps and a piece of fresh fruit. Eat in the hostel or take your packed lunch with you to enjoy during your day of exploring.

Supper Club

The licensed hostel caters particularly well for families, and its child-friendly menus are a real hit. This hostel offers the YHA Supper Club menu. This is a three course meal served at 7pm and sold at a set price. Guests in the Youth Hostel will have the opportunity to all sit around the table together and share stories with their fellow travellers - this is the authentic hostelling experience! Enjoy the amazing views from our dining room as you make some new friends.

Kids Eat Free

One free children's meal is available per adult main meal from the main menu when purchased at the same time. This offer is not available on breakfast.


We're licensed to sell alcohol and we stock a nice selection of speciality beers behind the bar. If you need warming up, try our delicious coffee and cake offer for just £3 - we're open to the public so feel free to pop in and join us!

Self-Catering Facilities

We have plenty of facilities at YHA Truleigh Hill so you'll be truly spoilt for choice. Cook up some culinary masterpieces with two ovens, eight hobs, one microwave, a fridge and freezer, two kettles and two toasters plus there's plenty of space for your preparations. There's lots of pots, pans, cutlery and crockery for you to dish up with too.

The length of our walking guides is given in miles and rounded to the nearest full mile (whole number) for simplicity. For short walks (of less than 2 miles) or walks that have a length that ends in .5, a more accurate walk length may be given in the first section of the walk introduction. For example, the Length in the header may be listed as 6 miles, and the introduction may confirm that the exact length of the walk is 5.5 miles. The walk length is calculated from the GPS file that was created by the walk author GPS tracking the walk whilst walking, using the iFootpath App GPS Tracker, meaning it is very accurate. Our bespoke tracker is particularly detailed and plots a walkers position about every 10 seconds. The tracker is calibrated to match two other reputable map and walking sources, Ordnance Survey and Nike. As with all standardised walk and map lengths, the distance does not take account of hills and slopes, just the distance you would measure using a piece of string on a flat map version of the terrain, so hilly walks will feel longer than stated. If you track the route using another GPS App or Tracker App or Fitness Device, you can expect the distance you record to be different due to different calibrations. This is particularly true of those Apps and devices that count your motion and steps – these can only guess the distance you have travelled with each step and so are much less accurate.

Grade (Boots)

The grade of a walk is an indicator of how difficult the terrain is that you will encounter along the way. This does not take into account the walk length but does suggest how challenging the walk will be. It takes into account things like hills, path surfaces and obstacles (like stiles, gates, steps and rock scrambles). An easy walk, graded as 1 (and shown as 1 Boot) indicates a walk that is essentially flat, has no sharp hills to climb, has no stiles, is easy to navigate (probably along a well-worn path) and is suitable for most levels of fitness. A difficult walk, graded as 5 (and represented by 5 Boots) indicates a walk that is strenuous and involves steep ascents and/or descents. It may be technically challenging involving difficult terrain or obstacles that require scrambling with your hands. Please note that the grading for walks is subjective and open to interpretation and should only be used as a guide when selecting a walk.

NOTE: Do be aware that the level of stamina required for any walk will vary depending on both the walk length and the difficulty grade - you should only walk within your limits.
