A charming 6 mile circular walk starting out from the country village of Fridaythorpe in East Yorkshire, journeying up across the Yorkshire Wolds to Thixendale and enjoying a quiet moment at the Happy Spiral.

There are some moderate climbs (16%) and descents along the way, and wide open fields at the top leading to glorious wide views over the Yorkshire countryside. Paths on the way out are comprised mostly of farm tracks and fields, the return walk is mostly via a quiet country lane with calming nature on either side. Kissing gates and stiles comprise most of the access points and there is a variety of natural wildlife. On our journey we came across, pheasants, various birds of prey, fields of sheep and an abundance of molehills. An alternate route via a local road at Waypoint 2 can avoid the sheep if this is a concern for dog walkers. Allow approximately 2.5 hours.

The walk starts at the Fridaythorpe Green and duck pond. Approximate post code is YO25 9RW and parking is free on Back Street and all surrounding roads.

Start to Brubberdale Gate

End point: 54.0226 lat, -0.6816 long

Begin the walk by following the road up the hill past the duck pond (on your left) and towards the ABN company building. As you reach the large ABN sign, take the farm access path to the left and follow this for a long uphill stretch. Take time to enjoy the views this begins to offer over the local farms. Keep continuing on straight across the fields until the path starts to descend and you reach a gate with a sign for Brubberdale.

End point: 54.0231 lat, -0.707 long

Pass through Brubberdale Gate and follow the path diagonally right across and down the hill. As you approach the bottom, bend round to the right following markers for the Yorkshire Wolds Way and into the valley. Here you will see a near endless trail of molehills, carry on straight past these until you reach a further gate on your left. Pass through the gate and journey up the hill. As you approach the top of the hill, pass through the kissing gate and take the new path ahead which turns away left at first and then continues straight. After a short while the path will bend left, but instead continue straight on following the edge of the field up to where it reaches the road and Farm House.

Cross over the road and continue straight (or to avoid encountering sheep later on in the walk, turn right onto the road and follow it all the way up to Thixendale for Waypoint 4). At the end of the field the path splits, take the turn to the left which leads downhill. As you descend you will spot a bench on the left with a scenic view looking over the valley, a nice spot for a cup of tea. Continue down the hill and enjoy the happy earth spiral which is said to represent a meeting point of “Waves and Time".

When you are ready to continue, turn a hard right back and into the valley, following again signs for the Wolds Way. Continue in the valley for some time. You will pass a gate, a treehouse and then reach a kissing gate leading into a field with sheep. Continue through the field and along the path until you eventually reach a paved road. At the road, turn right and continue forward until you see the sign for Thixendale.

Next to the Thixendale sign the road splits, if you wish to extend the walk you can continue into Thixendale itself and explore the small village, however to continue on the circular walk, take the road signed for Fridaythorpe which leads right and uphill. The incline here becomes quite steep (16%), however once you reach the top, the road will continue across fields rewarding your efforts with good views of the surrounding area. Follow the quiet country road now as it meanders up and down across the wolds until you see a waymarker for East Riding of Yorkshire.

At the waymarker continue along the road, entering back into North Yorkshire. Your legs might be tired at this point, however you are on the home stretch now. Follow the road gently all the way back to Fridaythorpe for conclusion of this circular tour.
