A 6.5 mile circular walk in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. Starting in Coln St Aldwyn, the first half of this walk follows the pretty River Coln to Bibury, and then returns across higher fields with wide open views. This is a lovely walk through delightful countryside and two very pretty villages. It is worth allowing some extra time to explore both Coln St Aldwyn and Bibury. The church in Coln St Aldwyn contains a display of the village’s history and the Williamstrip Estate which owns much of the surrounding land.

There are a couple of short sharp ascents and descents on the walk but otherwise it is very easy going. There is one low step-over stone slab stile, no other stiles but quite a few gates. The walk goes through mixed farmland and you may encounter sheep and cattle. Allow 3.5 hours.

For refreshments, there is a pub and community-owned village stores, post office and café in Coln St Aldwyn. There are several pubs and teashops in Bibury.

The walk starts in the centre of Coln St Aldwyn, by a chestnut tree on a grassy island on Main Street, outside the community-owned village stores and café, post code GL7 5AA. There is roadside parking throughout the village.

Walk Sections

Start to Gate Lodge
Start to Gate Lodge

Start point: 51.7454 lat, -1.7906 long
End point: 51.7413 lat, -1.7937 long

Standing outside the Col St Aldwyn village shop and facing the chestnut tree, turn left and then left again down Church Lane.

Just past the turning to the church, the lane turns into a track which heads downhill to a footbridge over the Coln. Turn left after the footbridge, walk down the driveway and then turn right when you meet the main road. Almost immediately, the road crosses a bridge and you turn right to a Gate Lodge and five-bar gate.

End point: 51.7483 lat, -1.8204 long

Go through the five-bar gate by the gate lodge house. There is a footpath waymarker post – take the footpath signposted to the right, also signposted for the Palladian Way. Follow the footpath signs and track, with the River Coln often in sight on your right-hand side. After 1.3 miles, when you leave the second patch of woodland by a five-bar gate, head across the next field bearing slightly left to reach a footbridge.

Start point: 51.7483 lat, -1.8204 long
End point: 51.7588 lat, -1.8306 long

Cross the footbridge over a brook, immediately followed by a low stone slab stile. Follow the path which takes you uphill and then flattens out, with woodland on the right-hand side falling steeply away down to the river. After just under half a mile, the path separates into two paths. Take the right-hand path, also signposted for the Palladian Way. The path drops downhill into open farmland towards buildings ahead (the outskirts of Bibury). Ignore any footpaths to the left. Stay on the path as it becomes a paved road and winds through some old mill buildings and then crosses the Coln. Pass Bibury Court on your left (now a hotel) and follow the lane up to a T junction. Turn left and follow the pavement round to the main road and a little bit further on to a red telephone box.

Start point: 51.7588 lat, -1.8306 long
End point: 51.7584 lat, -1.8369 long

Turn left at the red telephone box and keep straight ahead down a lane with a green on your left and cottages on your right. When you reach St Mary’s Church on your left, follow the lane round to the right to re-join the main road. Very shortly, turn left over a stone footbridge over the Coln and walk past the very pretty Arlington Row cottages (on your left).

Follow the lane uphill (up the delightfully named Awkward Hill) to a small grass triangle. On your left is a footpath signpost to Ready Token.

Start point: 51.7584 lat, -1.8369 long
End point: 51.742 lat, -1.8167 long

At the small grass triangle, follow the direction of the footpath sign to Ready Token, up a drive, through a gate and up a track to enter a field through another gate. Walk along the left edge of this field and the following field. At the end of the second field, turn left following the wall and hedge on your left.

Follow the path, following footpath signs, for 1.2 miles to a road. Turn left on the road (there is a broad verge to use if there is any traffic) and walk a short distance to pass some houses, the last one of which is called Coneygar Lodge. A short distance past Coneygar Lodge, there is a wide gate and footpath sign in the hedge on the left.

End point: 51.7426 lat, -1.8093 long

Just past Coneygar Lodge, go through the gate on the left and turn right to walk up the centre of the field. Exit the field and walk across the next field, passing in front of a pair of semi-detached cottages and across the driveway to a short concrete post on the edge of a field.

At the concrete post on the edge of the field, walk across the next two fields and enter a third field with a stone wall on your right. Follow the track alongside the stone wall and past the humpy remains of an old quarry. Pass under some beech trees to a five-bar gate.

End point: 51.7454 lat, -1.7906 long

Go through the five-bar gate by the beech trees. Bear left to drop down the hill towards Waypoint 1 at the Gate Lodge. Now retrace your steps back to the start of the walk in Coln St Aldwyn.

On the 'Ready Token' section where it says "Walk straight ahead, walking on the left edge of this field and the following field" it should say "Walk along the leaf edge of the field" not straight ahead.

ADMIN RESPONSE: Thank for you the suggested improvement, we have updated the guide.

A lovely taste of the English countryside and villages and leaving you with a satisfied, tired feeling.

Point 5....the directions weren’t very clear and took 3 attempts to work out right route. But eventually sussed it. 😬

ADMIN RESPONSE: Remember to use the App's live GPS map, particularly if you are unsure of the directions at any point. This shows your live location (a blue dot) relative to the route (a red line) and is the best way of keeping on track.
