This 3 mile circular walk in Oxfordshire takes you onto lesser known tracks near Woodstock - much of the walk follows permissive paths rather than public footpaths and so is very quiet as it is generally only known to locals. The walk includes a very special developing nature reserve area in the Glyme Valley and returns along an old railway embankment. Woodstock is a charming small market town, butting right up to the grounds of the Blenheim estate. (Another walk on iFootpath shows you how to enter the grounds of Blenheim on public footpaths where you can get good views of Blenheim Palace. You could easily link both walks for a longer combined circuit as the two routes overlap.)

The route is largely level walking with a few gentle slopes. It follows tracks and paths through countryside and nature reserves which are not hard-surfaced and so can be muddy and uneven. There are no stiles on route but you will need to negotiate a metal gate and some short sections of path are quite narrow. Allow 1.5 hours.

There are plenty of pubs and cafes in Woodstock, with a pub with a garden alongside the River Glyme just 200 yards south of Waypoint 5 on the main road.

The walk starts in Vermont Drive, off the main road (A44) on the northern side of Woodstock. Post code OX20 1YA. This is a residential street with roadside parking. Alternatively, you may prefer to park in the centre of Woodstock (where most of the pubs and cafes are) and walk out to Vermont Drive (about 0.5 mile along the main road). There's a free public car park (a couple of minutes from the main square) off Hensington Road (OX20 1JQ) - the entrance is between the fire station and library. Regular buses run between Woodstock and Oxford; and there is a bus stop on the main road near Vermont Drive.

Walk Sections

Start to Old Woodstock Playground
Start to Old Woodstock Playground

Start point: 51.8536 lat, -1.3614 long
End point: 51.8541 lat, -1.3599 long

Walk down Vermont Drive, away from the main road, to Rosamund Drive. Turn left on Rosamund Drive and walk the short distance up to the Old Woodstock Playground. To the left of the playground entrance is a footpath sign to Wootton.

Old Woodstock Playground to Field Barn
Old Woodstock Playground to Field Barn

Start point: 51.8541 lat, -1.3599 long
End point: 51.8626 lat, -1.3589 long

Follow the footpath sign to Wootton, left and then right round the edge of the play area and fenced playing field. Follow the footpath as it passes between two arable fields, with wide open views on both sides.

Cross through the hedge at a field boundary and you will see farm buildings in the distance ahead. At the farm buildings (Field Barn), the footpath crosses a track. Looking right on the track, you will see a sign on a telegraph pole: "Walkers are welcome to walk the private track ....."

Field Barn to Old Railway Embankment
Field Barn to Old Railway Embankment

Start point: 51.8626 lat, -1.3589 long
End point: 51.8594 lat, -1.3541 long

Turn right onto the track and follow it for just under half a mile until you come to junction in the track. At this point, we follow a detour to visit a new and developing nature reserve. Take the left branch which drops down to the flood plain of the River Glyme. There is a lake here, the Glyme on the far side, whilst a broad track follows a wide stream which joins the Glyme after 0.2 miles.

When you have finished enjoying this area, retrace your steps back to the track junction. Turn around to face the way you originally approached this junction. On the right-hand side, just before the left turn that you followed down to the river plain, there is a narrow path between hawthorn bushes.

Old Railway Embankment to Path Junction
Old Railway Embankment to Path Junction

Start point: 51.8594 lat, -1.3541 long
End point: 51.8538 lat, -1.3577 long

At the track junction take the narrow path on the right (as described above), between hawthorn bushes. It is easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled.

The narrow path soon widens and continues along what appears to be the remains of the railway embankment for about half a mile, until the path divides into two, on the edge of housing.

Path Junction to Metal Gate
Path Junction to Metal Gate

Start point: 51.8538 lat, -1.3577 long
End point: 51.8512 lat, -1.3601 long

Take the left-hand branch at this the path junction. (Turning right is a short cut back to Old Woodstock Playground). Follow the path with housing on the right-hand side and with lovely views across fields to Woodstock. The path leads to a metal gate.

Metal Gate to End
Metal Gate to End

Start point: 51.8512 lat, -1.3601 long
End point: 51.8535 lat, -1.3614 long

Go through the metal gate and walk straight ahead, to the main road. Turn right on the main road and walk back to the start of the walk in Vermont Drive. (Turn left on the main road if you parked in the town centre).

Before you head home you may want to visit Blenheim Orange House - turn left on the main road and the house is a short distance from Waypoint 5, on the opposite side of the road and opposite the Black Prince pub. This is a great place if you are an apple fan and want to pay homage to where the first Blenheim Orange apple was grown. The apple was grown in the garden of 3 Manor Road (although the original tree no longer exists).
