A 5 mile circular walk between Blockley and Batsford in the north Cotswolds within Gloucestershire, with some glorious views. It loops between the lovely village of Blockley, where the Father Brown series was filmed, and the Batsford Park estate with the Batsford arboretum and tiny pretty hamlet of Batsford. You can turn this walk into a longer outing if you visit the Batsford arboretum (approximately half way round the walk). Batsford Park was once home to the famous Mitford sisters - see www.batsarb.co.uk/pdfs/The%20Mitfords%20at%20Batsford%20Park.pdf for further info.

The walk climbs over the hill between Blockley and Batsford and there are two ascents of about 0.5 miles each, with equal length descents. There are a number of stiles and gates to negotiate. There is also 0.5 mile of road walking, on a normally quite lane. You are very likely to encounter livestock on the walk. Allow 2.5 hours.

For refreshments there are two pubs and a community owned cafe and village shop in Blockley; and a cafe with an outdoor terrace in the Batsford arboretum visitor centre.

The walk starts at the community owned cafe and village stores on Bell Lane in Blockley. There is unrestricted roadside parking. Approximate post code GL56 9BB.

Walk Sections

Start to Barn
Start to Barn

Start point: 52.0128 lat, -1.7622 long
End point: 52.0098 lat, -1.7528 long

Facing the cafe and village stores, turn right and walk into the churchyard. Follow the path past the front of the church and through the graveyard. Once you leave the graveyard, turn right and go down a short steep lane. Turn right again onto Lower Street (take care as there is a short stretch with no pavement as the road curves left), walk about 0.1 miles and turn left at the first left turning, up a lane signposted to Pasture Farm.

The lane starts to climb uphill and turns into an unsurfaced farm track. After 0.3 miles, the track swings left in front of a modern barn.

Barn to Roadside Gate

Start point: 52.0098 lat, -1.7528 long
End point: 52.0071 lat, -1.7342 long

Facing the barn, leave the farm track and walk straight ahead, passing to the right of the barn, and continue to follow the path uphill. Go uphill through several fields and gates and follow the path as it bears left and levels out, with a line of mature trees on your right and wide open views. Go through the next two fields, keeping close to the field edge on the left. In the third field, bear diagonally right to cross the field and go through a gate onto a road.

Start point: 52.0071 lat, -1.7342 long
End point: 52.0033 lat, -1.7226 long

Follow the road directly ahead and downhill. After 0.4 miles, turn right at the T-junction signposted to Batsford village. Follow the road to visit the small and very pretty hamlet of Batsford, made up of estate buildings and cottages and Batsford Church (there is no access to the arboretum here). From the church, retrace your steps to the Y-junction and take the right turn (not the lane you entered Batsford along) to walk 0.2 miles down a lane through an avenue of beech trees. Turn right on the main road and very shortly turn right again at a footpath markerpost.

Start point: 52.0033 lat, -1.7226 long
End point: 51.9965 lat, -1.7345 long

Follow the path and waymark signs along the right-hand edge of six fields. After a couple of fields, Batsford Park House is in sight on the right-hand side, overlooking a deer park where you can often see herds of deer.

At the end of the final field, you go though a gate into a large field. Turn right and, walking along the field edge, walk up to a gate lodge house. Go through the gate alongside the gate lodge on to the drive. (Here you can turn right to divert and visit the arboretum or its cafe should you wish).

Start point: 51.9965 lat, -1.7345 long
End point: 51.9987 lat, -1.7421 long

Go straight past the gate lodge, across the drive and through the gate opposite. Walk up the field, climbing gently to a stile. Once over the stile, join a wide track climbing up the hill through woodland.

A short distance after the track leaves the woodland (about 0.1 miles), as the track swings left, keep your eyes peeled for a right-hand track waymarked for the Heart of England and Monarchs Way.

Monarchs Way to Road Crossing

Start point: 51.9987 lat, -1.7421 long
End point: 52.0013 lat, -1.748 long

Take this right-hand turning up the footpath signposted for the Heart of England and Monarchs Way, which continues to climb up the hill, with woodland on the left and fields on the right-hand side. After 0.25 miles, the path levels out and reaches a stile and gate onto a road.

Start point: 52.0013 lat, -1.748 long
End point: 52.0052 lat, -1.7544 long

Go over the stile and cross the road. Follow the track on the opposite side, waymarked for the Heart of England Way.

Follow this path through 2 large fields, reaching a T-junction with another track. Turn left through a gate (Heart of England Way) and continue gently downhill for about 0.1 miles until you reach a gate and stile on your right.

Gate and Stile to End

Start point: 52.0052 lat, -1.7544 long
End point: 52.0128 lat, -1.7622 long

Go over the stile and head downhill, with wooden posts keeping you on track through this large field. Go over a stile, over a farm driveway, and head towards the right of a large pond. Veer diagonally right away from the pond, towards a stile and gate. Enter the next field and go over a further stile to reach an unsurfaced lane. Follow the lane down to a main road (Lower Street) which returns to Blockley.

Turn right on the main road (Lower Street) and retrace your steps to the church and end of the walk.
