A 3.5 mile 'there and back' peaceful wooded walk along the River Teign in Devon, which is good for both daffodils and bluebells. You can park near Steps Bridge or in the nearby free car park; then follow the bridleway through the Nature Reserve to its end at Boyland Road. This is fundamentally a linear walk, though there are three opportunities to veer off the main bridleway and walk alongside the River Teign - these are marked. The path is flat and well made, so ordinary footwear should be sufficient except in the worst of weather. There are no gates or stiles to negotiate. There used to be a circular on both sides of the River Teign. This walk is now impossible due to an access issue (a short path from the car park into Cod Wood is in private hands and permission has been withdrawn). Allow 1.5 hours.

From Exeter: Take the A377 slip road off the A30 once you are past Exeter. Then take the B3212 down Farrants Hill and Six Mile Hill. When you reach Dunsford, do not turn into the village but continue down Six Mile Hill until you reach Dunsford Nature Reserve on your right, where there is a small amount of roadside parking and a free car park a little further on. The post code for the reserve is EX6 7EG.

Walk Sections

Start to Fork with Bridleway
Start to Fork with Bridleway

Start point: 50.6824 lat, -3.6927 long
End point: 50.6838 lat, -3.6963 long

Follow the path from the entrance of the Nature Reserve alongside the River Teign. The river will be running on your left and this path is known for its bluebells and daffodils.

Fork with Bridleway to Boyland Road

Start point: 50.6838 lat, -3.6963 long
End point: 50.6902 lat, -3.7224 long

At various points on the path there are Bridleway signposts which take you slightly inland. You can follow these if you wish to explore, but the basic route is alongside the river. Stick to the left-hand path to walk along the River Teign.

Boyland Road to End
Boyland Road to End

Start point: 50.6902 lat, -3.7224 long
End point: 50.6824 lat, -3.6927 long

At the far end you will emerge to a junction with Boyland Road. At Boyland Road there is a small amount of on road parking. You can walk a little further to Clifford Cross if you wish, but the circular route is no longer possible due to access being withdrawn. So we re-traced our steps once we reached Boyland Road. From Boyland Road you simply retrace your steps back to the start of the Nature Reserve, although you can follow the bridleway signs and take a more inland route to vary the walk slightly should you wish.

Remember...the best way of following our walking guides is to use the iFootpath App (iOS and Android) where you will have all the information in the palm of your hand and see your exact location on the live map as you travel. You can also add comments, photos, ratings and track your own routes.
