A 5 mile circular walk from the village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire. The route takes you through classic limestone scenery and visits three iconic sites – the waterfall of Janet’s Foss, the steep gorge of Gordale Scar and the beautiful limestone pavement and impressive natural cove of Malham Cove. The limestone pavement has been made famous on the large screen, most famously featuring in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

The walk follows a mixture of footpaths and tracks alongside rivers and through grass pastures. There are several climbs and descents throughout. You will need to negotiate steps, kissing gates, gates and stiles. You will be sharing some of the paths with sheep. Allow 2.5 hours.

The walk starts and finishes at the National Park Car Park on the edge of Malham village. From Skipton, take the A65 to Gargrave (4km). Turn right and follow the road in to Airton village (4 km). From Airton, follow the road through Kirkby Malham to Malham. Park in the National Park Car Park which is found on the left just before entering the village. Approximate post code BD23 4DA.

Leave the car park and turn left along the road to enter Malham. Just before you reach the Buck Inn, turn right to leave the road and cross the footbridge. Once over the footbridge, turn right along the stone path. Pass through a wooden gate and continue ahead, now heading away from Malham on a stretch of the Pennine Way. Follow the path through a kissing gate with Malham Beck on your right.

After the next kissing gate, turn left to follow the footpath signed to Janet's Foss. The path has a wall on your right and a fence on your left. Stay with this footpath, passing through three more kissing gates along the way and ignoring a footbridge to the right. Take the next kissing gate ahead to enter the beautiful woodland ravine, which is filled with wild garlic in the spring months.

Follow the pretty woodland path and this will lead you to Janet's Foss waterfall. You may be wondering where the waterfall gets its name. Foss is the old Scandinavian word for waterfall. According to legend, Janet was the queen of the local fairies and lived in a cave behind the waterfall. The waterfall carries Gordale Beck over this limestone outcrop and into the deep pool below. The pool was traditionally used for sheep dipping.

Continue on the footpath which now climbs to the left of the waterfall. You will emerge via a kissing gate to reach the lane. Turn right and follow the road for about 50 metres (ignoring the first footpath kissing gate on your left – we will return to this in a moment) to a point where it bends round to the right. Here you will see a gate and clear path on the left-hand side for Gordale Scar. Take this path which leads you through a camp site and then continues pleasantly next to a stream for about half a mile, before arriving at the imposing form of Gordale Scar ahead. Take time to enjoy this impressive sight.

End point: 54.0732 lat, -2.1585 long

When you have finished at the scar, retrace your steps back to the road and turn right for 50 metres, to reach the lay-by at Gordale Bridge. Head into this lay-by and turn right through the kissing gate, joining the path signed to Malham Cove. Follow the path as it leads you to a stone wall corner and then continues with this wall on your right, climbing steadily. You will reach a kissing gate ahead, pass through this and head diagonally right across the field. In the corner, take the stone steps and gate and then bear left to follow the line of the wall. At the next wall junction, go through the gate and turn left to continue with a wall on your left. At the end of the path you will emerge to the road, Malham Rakes.

Turn right and almost immediately turn left over a stile across the wall. Head directly away from the road and wall, passing over a small rise and then continuing in the same direction. A little further along, the path continues with a wall on your left. As you reach the far corner of this wall, alongside a Malham Cove sign, head diagonally left towards the limestone pavement. Pass through the wall gap or cross the stile to reach the pavement and then make your way across this wonderful geological wonder. Do take care on this surface, being careful to avoid the fissures, and remember there is a very deep drop across to your left, so avoid the edge.

At the far side of the pavement you will reach a wall ahead. Turn left down the side of this wall and head through the kissing gate. The path turns quickly into a long staircase of stone steps which drops steeply to the valley floor and the spectacular setting which is Malham Cove. Take time to enjoy the idyllic scene. The rock face may be home to climbers and also peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled.

Once at the bottom you will pass through a gate and reach a fork in the path. At this fork, take the right-hand branch and follow the path as it heads south, alongside a small stream, towards the village of Malham. From the foot of the cove to the village centre is one kilometre distance and full of interest. Pubs and tea shops galore await you in the village at the end of the walk.

Definitely the best way to approach the Malham Cove to avoid all the steps to get upto it, you just have to negotiate your way down. Beautiful views from the top and then looking back at the cove. No perigrin falcons flying today as it was too warm.
