This is a linear walk of around 4.5 miles from Broxbourne to St Margarets (also known as Stanstead St Margarets) in Hertfordshire, with an option to return by train. It follows the course of the River Lee Navigation so is largely flat with just a couple of short climbs to get up and over bridges or through locks. There are no gates or stiles to navigate. The route is via the riverside path which, especially in the first part, can be a little uneven and muddy in poor weather. There are a few pubs along the way for refreshment stops. Allow 2 hours.

The walk starts at Broxbourne rail station (EN10 7AW), which is on the West Anglia main line and about 30-40 minutes journey from London Liverpool Street. Local buses stop outside the station, there is an NCP car park on site, and bike racks are available. The finish point is in Stanstead St Margarets at St Margarets rail station (SG12 8DS).

Broxbourne station is a Grade II listed building, listed for its architectural interest. Exit the station and walk straight ahead and up the incline past the car park. Turn left into Nazeing New Road and cross the bridge over the railway. Bear right and you should immediately see a narrow side road named Old Nazeing Road, which you should take.

Follow this road as it passes the Lee Valley Boating Centre and leads over a bridge across the river. After this you should drop down immediately left at The Crown pub and join the riverside path, walking with the river on your left and the pub garden on the right.

Follow the path as it takes you through Carthagena Lock and into the River Lee Navigation area proper. The footpath here can be a little uneven and muddy but there is a better road that runs parallel, and often converges, called Meadgate Road.

As Meadgate Road turns right towards a nature reserve and a sailing club, you should continue along the riverside path where you will come to Dobb's Weir Lock. Shortly after this you will see a pub named the Fish and Eels. Here you need to cross the river via the road bridge and join the river path on the other side. This is Dobb’s Weir.

Start point: 51.7556 lat, 0.0057 long
End point: 51.7699 lat, 0.0061 long

As you rejoin the riverside path (now on the opposite bank) you will see Dobb’s Weir, where you can take a few minutes to have a look around and get views of the pub on the opposite bank. Continue your journey along the path, this time with the river on your right. You will also see a bit of industrial activity to the left. The next point of note is Feildes Weir Lock (where Rattys Lane crosses the river and leads to the River Stort).

Ignore Rattys Lane and continue to follow the riverside path, past the smart-looking lock keeper’s cottage as the river opens wider and you head under a railway bridge. Just after this you might hear some excitement from the Rye House Kart Raceway or the sports stadium on the right.

Shortly you will see the Rye House pub on the right and go under the Rye Road bridge, with a sign to Rye House train station (which is the intermediate stop between Boxbourne and St Margarets). As you pass under the bridge you will see a sign telling you that you are now 2.75 miles from Broxbourne and have 1.25 miles to go to St Margarets.

The next section of the walk is quite ‘green’ and you have an RSPB area on the opposite side of the river. The path then leads under a bridge (which is the main A414 road) and you will soon arrive into a more residential area.

Stanstead Marina will appear shortly with many moorings and a boatyard. The next bridge is where the walk ends. Leave the path and ascend to the road turning left. Here you will see a pub called the Jolly Fisherman. A little further on is St Margarets rail station, which has a small café outside selling snacks. Trains back to Broxbourne take around 8 minutes and run at half hourly intervals every day.
