This is a 9 mile circular and challenging walk through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. The walk starts in the old wool town of Painswick, passes through the Slad Valley (the setting for Laurie Lee's "Cider With Rosie") to Bisley and returns along the Wysis Way. There are several steep ascents and descents and numerous stiles and kissing gates to negotiate. The stiles include stone stiles, fence stiles and at least one in double formation. The route follows field paths, tracks and lanes. You may be sharing some of the fields with livestock. Allow 5 hours. Refreshments are available in Painswick where there are several pubs, restaurant and tea-rooms, and in Bisley which has a pub and a tea-room.

The walk starts at Stamages Lane Car Park in Painswick, post code GL6 6UZ. This is a pay-and-display car park. There is also limited free parking on the main road just outside the car park.

End point: 51.7587 lat, -2.1886 long

The path is narrow through trees with a dry-stone wall on the left and a wire fence on the right. After emerging from the trees, cross a stile and carry on down a field, keeping to the left edge. At the bottom of the field, cross a stile by a metal five-barred gate. Left Turn to Stile
Left Turn to Stile

Start point: 51.7554 lat, -2.1854 long
End point: 51.7539 lat, -2.1814 long

The track descends between two wooden fences and passes a large garden on the left. At the bottom of the track, turn left along a lane (Slad Lane). Follow the lane as it winds uphill to a crossroads. Bear right along Slad Lane. Pass Abbey Farm and then turn sharply left along a signposted path. At a crossroads, carry straight on and then shortly turn left up through trees on a permissive path. In about 100 yards look out for a footpath sign on the right, leading you up four steps and over a stile. Take this path.

Stile to Crossroads

Start point: 51.7539 lat, -2.1814 long
End point: 51.7503 lat, -2.1748 long

Follow the path across a field. Cross a double stile and continue along the track in the same direction. Cross two stiles to reach Bisley Road. Cross the road and take the path that carries on in the same direction to reach a stone stile. This stile leads you out onto a lane.

Bear right along the lane. In about 150 yards, at a crossroads, turn left onto a footpath lane signposted to Ferris Court and Home Farm.

Crossroads to Far Wells Road
Crossroads to Far Wells Road

Start point: 51.7481 lat, -2.1753 long
End point: 51.7501 lat, -2.1413 long

In about 500 yards, where the lane bends round to the right, look for a kissing gate on the left. Go through the gate and cross a field to take a stile in the left-hand corner. Go steeply downhill and over another stile and then follow the track indicated by posts with a yellow marking on top. Continue downhill, crossing another stile. Keep straight on downhill at a yellow public footpath sign. On reaching the trees at the bottom, turn left for a few yards and then immediately right to go over a stile and an old stone bridge.

At a meeting of tracks, continue straight on, heading steeply upwards to a stile leading into a field. Walk across the middle of the field in the same direction to reach a stile into the next field. Keep straight on at a marker sign (which points left). Pass a stile no longer in use. Halfway along the field look for a stile on the left. Cross this stile and, in a few yards, turn right along a path leading to Far Wells Road.

Far Wells Road to Wysis Way

End point: 51.7575 lat, -2.143 long

Walk left along Far Wells Road and keep left at a Y-junction. Turn left up Bisley Steps, walk through the churchyard and then the school playground to exit onto School Road. Bear right to the main road and turn left past the Bear Inn. Take the first road on the right and then turn left at a footpath sign. Continue following the path and roads through the housing estate. Turn right at Windyridge and then left at Cheltenham Road. Continue along Cheltenham Road, bearing right at a junction signposted The Camp and Birdlip, to reach a track on the left signposted Wysis Way.

On reaching a fork after a gate, keep left. The path winds steeply down the side of a wood with fine views of the valley on the left. On reaching a house in the valley (Driftcombe Farmhouse), keep to the path to the right. Keep following the Wysis Way to reach two garages and cottages.

Start point: 51.7698 lat, -2.1595 long
End point: 51.771 lat, -2.1668 long

From the second cottage take a rather indistinct path on the left that leads downhill in the same direction that you have been going. The path is eroded in places so care is needed. There are spectacular views to the left. Pass through a wooden gate and continue downhill towards some trees. At the bottom of the hill, the path crosses a stream and ascends steeply to a house with a magnificent view over the valley.

House with a View to Right Turn

End point: 51.7735 lat, -2.1762 long

Follow the lane past the house and continue along the well-signposted Wysis Way, bending right to pass cottages on the right. The track bends left, right then left again and finally reaches a right turn through a gate.

Right Turn to End
Right Turn to End

Start point: 51.7735 lat, -2.1762 long
End point: 0 lat, 0 long

The path descends steeply and then rises steeply again. (The bottom of the valley can be very muddy.) At the top of the slope, cross a stile and join a metalled road. The road bends left, then right (round a house) and then left again. Cross the B4070 and continue along Yokehouse Lane. On reaching Greenhouse Lane, bear right and follow the lane to where it becomes Tibbiwell Lane.

Continue along Tibbiwell Lane, passing Tabitha's Well on your right. At the end of Tibbiwell Lane, turn left along St Mary's Street and then enter the churchyard of St Mary's Church with its magnificent avenues of yew trees. Walk through the churchyard, leave by the lych-gate and turn left along New Street. You will soon reach Stamages Lane car park on your left where the walk began.
