A 4 mile circular walk close to the village of Shoreham, near Sevenoaks in Kent. This circular walk, on a chalk hillside above the glorious Darent Valley, takes in broadleaf woods, a grass escarpment edge with wildflowers and great views, and an ancient village with superb old cottages, pubs and a river path. The first two miles are through woodland – Meenfield and Pilots Woods – on top of a ridge separating the Darent Valley from a 'dry valley' just to the west. After two miles, walkers emerge from the woods spectacularly at Kent Wildlife Trust-managed Polhill Bank on the steep chalk hillside with views over to Knole Park and beyond, and after this there are regular views of the Darent Valley. There are superb bluebells in late April in Meenfield Woods and the chance of seeing Spitfires and Hurricanes flying over from Biggin Hill airfield. Wonderful oak, beech, ash, cypress, yew and chestnut trees about and kestrels, buzzards, deer and slow worms have been regularly seen by this walker. The more observant may detect the presence of grass snakes, owls, lizards – that sort of thing.

The walk includes several climbs and descents throughout, with some sections that can be muddy. Until Polhill Bank you will be able to hear the M25 which is nearby, but once walking on the eastern side of the ridge the rushing sound of traffic will magically disappear. You will need to negotiate both gates and stiles and you may be sharing some of the fields with sheep. Allow 2 hours.

Shoreham village is located about 5 miles north of Sevenoaks. The walk starts and finishes from a roadside verge on Shacklands Road, just north of the village.

If you are coming by train, you can adjust the walk to start at Waypoint 4 (The War Memorial) which is a half-mile walk from the rail station. There are direct trains to Shoreham station from London St Pancras Thameslink (70 mins) London Blackfriars (60 mins), Peckham Rye (45 mins) and Bromley South (20 mins). The station also connects to Sevenoaks main line.

If travelling by car, head for the Badgers Mount roundabout on the A224, where an exit is marked 'Shoreham Village'. Park for free on the generous stone verge, just before the junction of Shacklands Road with High Street (after which Shacklands Road becomes Castle Farm Road). If by chance there is no space here, continue down the High Street to the Shoreham village free public car park and join the walk on Shoreham High Street (between Waypoints 3 and 4). The nearest post code for the start point parking verge is TN14 7TU (this will take you just a few hundred metres away).

End point: 51.3389 lat, 0.1754 long

The walk begins from the wide stone verge on Shacklands Road just before its junction with the High Street. Before setting off on the walk, take a moment to enjoy the view through the trees on the opposite (north) side of the road (pictured). To being the walk, enter the woods on the signed footpath, following the path to the right (south), uphill along the line of the valley. After around 150 metres you will reach a fork. Take the right branch, marked Meenfield Woods, and continue uphill through the woods.

Meenfield Wood to Polhill Bank
Meenfield Wood to Polhill Bank

Start point: 51.3389 lat, 0.1754 long
End point: 51.3226 lat, 0.161 long

The path levels out fairly quickly, running on top of the wooded ridge dividing the Darent Valley from the Andrews Wood Valley just to the west. It is straight on all the way for two miles. You will pass through a pine avenue of trees just after a path junction (go straight on), later passing a field on your left with a great view (you will see this again later). At the path junction at the end of this field continue south (straight on) entering more woods, passing the Pilots Wood sign on your right. The M25 has now become noisier - you are gradually getting closer to it.

Eventually the path joins another path coming from the right and then goes past a footbridge over the motorway. After this, the path bends downhill to the left and passes through a metal gate on to Polhill Bank and a welcome bench with a great view over the head of the valley over to Knole Park, Otford, Kemsing and Ightam.

Start point: 51.3226 lat, 0.161 long
End point: 51.335 lat, 0.1717 long

Descend on the path above the Polhill Bank, heading east in and out of the trees, until you reach a large field. Ignore the path through the gate straight ahead, instead turn sharp left (north). Continue past a picnic table and dense vegetation on a steep slope to the left. Soon the path begins to climb, curving to the left (west) as it steepens; note the field ahead of you beyond the trees. The path finally reaches a junction you passed earlier (at the entrance to Pilots Wood). Here, turn sharp right (north-east), climbing over a stile, into a hillside field with a great view of the Darent Valley ahead. Note there are sometimes sheep in this field so dogs will need to be on a lead.

Descend the field diagonally on the path, passing a bench, then enter the woods through a metal gate. Follow the path heading north, running parallel with the Meenfield Woods path that you followed in the first part of the walk. Continue for about 700 metres until you reach a path crossroads and turn right (on a path that heads sharply downhill towards Shoreham).

End point: 51.3337 lat, 0.1814 long

Descend the hillside (heading east). After 400 metres, pass Shoreham Aircraft Museum and its cottage on the right (also with tea garden) and emerge onto the High Street. Turn right, then take the first left into Church Street. Pass a pub on the right and cross the old road bridge over the River Darent, with a war memorial just to your left.

Start point: 51.3337 lat, 0.1814 long
End point: 51.3405 lat, 0.1759 long

Turn left to walk past the war memorial and continue on the tarmac path along the river for about 600 metres (with the river on your left). Cross a footbridge with Mill House beyond. Bear left to walk up Mill Lane, past ancient cottages. You will come to a T-junction with the High Street. Cross the High Street (ahead) and take the footpath which bears right along the raised verge opposite (view looking south pictured). This path leads you along the side of a field (on your left) back to your car parked on Shacklands Road.

Great walk, steep and slippery at sections but it had rained today. Will look forward to completing again in the spring.
