A 4 mile circular trail in Hampshire, from Rownhams Wood to Chilworth and back. This is a beautiful woodland walk within easy reach for the locals and visitors alike, due to its proximity to the M27, but it does suffer a bit from motorway noise, particularly at the Rownhams end. The route takes you first through Forestry Commission land and then past Chilworth Golf Course. Chilworth Conservation Area is in the old grounds of Chilworth Manor and well worth a wander round. The route back takes you through the Southampton University Science Park. For interest's sake, I have included an extra loop at Tanner's Brook on the return leg, but the further south you are, the nearer you are to the motorway, so if you are sensitive to road noise you may want to skip this and just head back the way you came.

The walk is generally flat with a few inclines as you near Chilworth. There are no stiles or gates and dogs are welcome in the conservation area as long as they are under control. The paths through Rownhams Wood can get a bit boggy, so wellies or stout walking boots are recommended. In the conservation area the paths are narrow and not signed so not always easy to follow (remember to use the App's live GPS map). There are numerous narrow plank bridges over streams in the conservation area so you should not get wet feet here. You will not be sharing any of the paths with livestock. Allow 1.5 hours.

Rownhams is a suburb on the north side of Southampton near the M27 motorway. To reach Rownhams Lane from Southampton take signs for Romsey (A3057). To reach Rownhams from the M27, leave at Junction 3 and head north towards Romsey on the M271. At the roundabout, take the last exit and head towards Southampton on the A3057. You will pass Romsey Golf Club on your left. Once on the A3057, turn down Baker's Drove. At the T junction turn left down Rownhams Lane and drive over the motorway. Rownhams Wood is down the hill and round the bend on the right. There is a little roadside parking next to the wood. (If this parking is full, there is also parking at the Chilworth Conservation Area to the rear of Chilworth Manor, and you could adjust the walk to start from that point if needed). Approximate post code for Rownhams Lane, SO52 9LP.

Start to i20 Water
Start to i20 Water

Start point: 50.9621 lat, -1.4483 long
End point: 50.9631 lat, -1.4307 long

From the roadside parking on Rownhams Lane, take the wide path heading down into the woods. After a while, this path narrows and goes uphill through the trees. At the top, there is a fence with a "Private Property" sign and the i20 water complex on your right.

Start point: 50.9631 lat, -1.4307 long
End point: 50.9639 lat, -1.4308 long

Take a sharp left and walk down the hill alongside the fence. The path turns a corner to the right and takes you out of the woods onto a cart track which runs alongside Chilworth Golf Course (which is on your left).

Start point: 50.9639 lat, -1.4308 long
End point: 50.9646 lat, -1.4297 long

Follow the cart track around the corner to the left. When you reach an open section of the golf course on your left, you will also see an opening in the woods on your right. This is the rear entrance to the Chilworth Conservation Area and is marked with a piece of white-painted wood on the ground.

Start point: 50.9646 lat, -1.4297 long
End point: 50.9643 lat, -1.4244 long

Enter the conservation area and turn immediately left. The path is quite narrow at this point but there are lots of plank bridges to guide your way. It leads through the woods on the north side of Chilworth Manor. On your left through the trees you can see fields and houses (old Chilworth village). When you see parked cars on your right over a little rise, you have arrived at the car park of Chilworth Manor.

(If you want to make your walk a little shorter, you can turn right at this point and head through the car park to reach the conservation area to the rear of the manor).

Start point: 50.9643 lat, -1.4244 long
End point: 50.9652 lat, -1.4202 long

For the full route, keep going through the woods to your left and the path will take you through the woods and towards the A27 Botley road (at the front of the manor). University Parkway will be immediately in front of you and the busy A27 Botley Road will be on your left.

University Parkway to Southern Entrance

Start point: 50.9652 lat, -1.4202 long
End point: 50.962 lat, -1.4285 long

Turn right (away from the main road) and walk along University Parkway. You will pass several roads and complexes and go past the south side of Chilworth Manor. Towards the end of University Parkway there are some very large pine trees on the right where you will see the southern entrance to the Chilworth Conservation Area.

Start point: 50.962 lat, -1.4285 long
End point: 50.9632 lat, -1.4285 long

Enter the conservation area and the first thing you will see is a dramatic circle of pine trees. In the conservation area you will also find a pond with a bridge to a small island, old paths and garden features, an apple orchard and a stretch of open field. At the top of the field is the gate to the car park and you can also see Chilworth Manor from the rear (use the App's GPS map to guide you). To get back to Rownhams Wood you need to head down the hill and back into the woods.

End point: 50.9633 lat, -1.4289 long

Leaving the field behind you, go down the hill and into the woods. The path is quite narrow at this point but try and bear right through the woods. On your right and slightly uphill, you should be able to see the open field through the trees.

Woodland Path to Tanner's Brook

Start point: 50.9633 lat, -1.4289 long
End point: 50.9622 lat, -1.4411 long

Keeping the conservation area field on your right, follow the path down through the woods and over some more plank bridges. Eventually you will see Chilworth Golf Course and the cart track again and you will arrive at the rear entrance to the conservation area again. Retrace your steps past the golf course and through Rownhams Wood.

Tanner's Brook to End
Tanner's Brook to End

Start point: 50.9622 lat, -1.4411 long
End point: 50.9621 lat, -1.4482 long

When you reach Tanner's Brook, you have the option to turn left and walk an extra loop which will take you due south alongside the stream. The loop then leaves the stream and takes you west through the woods and back to the car park. (If should be noted that this section is the noisiest because of its proximity to the motorway, so if you are sensitive to road noise you may want to skip it and simply retrace your steps through Rownhams Wood again).
