A 4 mile circular walk alongside Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire. The walk starts from the lay-by alongside Ladybower, heading up Lead Hill and down across the moor towards Cutthroat Bridge, then through the Ladybower Wood nature reserve back to the start. There is a moderate climb up to Lead Hill, but otherwise it is easy walking. You will need to negotiate several gates but there are no stiles on route. There is no farm livestock on route, but watch out for red grouse on the moor. Allow 2 hours.

The walk starts in the parking lay-by on the A57 Snake Road, just before the bridge over Ladybower Reservoir. Nearest post code S33 0AX.

Start point: 53.3741 lat, -1.7043 long
End point: 53.3748 lat, -1.7085 long

The walk begins from the lay-by on the A57. Standing on the pavement facing the road, turn left to walk along the pavement (heading west with the road on your right and the water on your left). At the end of the lay-by (and just before the bridge), cross over the road with care to bear right up a side lane. Follow the lane around as it bears back on itself up the hill. Continue up the lane through a gate until you eventually reach a junction by a gated fence. At this lane end, you will be at a fence with gates. Go through the gate on the left to continue up hill through the woods.

End point: 53.381 lat, -1.708 long

Continue through the woods as the path undulates, before climbing steeply as it exits the trees. The path up towards Lead hill is steep. There are fine views of the northern arm of Ladybower Reservoir as you exit the trees.

Start point: 53.381 lat, -1.708 long
End point: 53.383 lat, -1.7042 long

Continue on the path. At the top of the climb, there is a flat plateau. This is not the highest point of the moor, but is the summit for this walk. There are lovely panoramic views of the surrounding areas, including Mam Tor and Kinder Scout to the west, Win Hill and Bamford Edge.

When leaving the plateau, take the gentle downward path heading roughly east. Watch out for red grouse on the way down!

Summit to Stream

Start point: 53.383 lat, -1.7042 long
End point: 53.3841 lat, -1.6807 long

Follow the path all the way down admiring the panoramic views and the cackling of the red grouse. Eventually the path forks (pictured). The left-hand route would take you down towards Cutthroat Bridge. Do NOT take this, but instead bear right along the level path.

Shortly after taking this right-hand fork, another path joins from the left. At this point you might just see Cutthroat Bridge. Ignore the path joining from the left and continue straight on along a level well-defined path. Continue along this path as you head towards some woodland.

Stream to End
Stream to End

Start point: 53.3833 lat, -1.6809 long
End point: 53.3795 lat, -1.6873 long

The path arrives at a gate where a stream crosses the path. Take care crossing the slippery stones and continue into Ladybower Wood Nature Reserve. Continue to follow the well-defined path as it descends but take care as the route can be rocky. You will pass through a gate before arriving at a fork in the path.

The left-hand fork would take you down to the Ladybower Inn (and you can use this for a detour if you fancy a swift pint). For the main route bear right towards Ashopton. Continue along this path, mostly running adjacent to a wall on the left after a couple of hundred yards. The path rises a few times but you should not deviate and keep the wall on your left at all times. Follow the path all the way down to the gate. At this point you have completed the loop and should recognise the junction at which you entered the wood and the climb to Lead Hill near the start of the walk. Unless you want to go around again, continue ahead to retrace your steps down the lane, back across the road to the lay-by where the walk began. I hope you enjoyed the walk!
