A circular walk of just over 3 miles from Towneley Park near Burnley, Lancashire. Towneley Park surrounds the beautiful Towneley Hall. Home of the Towneley family for almost 500 years, the hall was sold to Burnley Corporation in 1901 when the male line of the family came to an end. Situated in 400 acres of beautiful parkland, Burnley Council has developed the building into an art gallery and museum, with fine period rooms decorated with oil paintings and sculptures. Towneley Hall has been called the Jewel in Burnley’s Crown but that understates its significance – certainly it is one of Lancashire’s most important buildings and by any measure should be high on the list of national treasures. The grounds are a great place to walk at any time of year.

The parkland is open all year (normally until dusk) but the museum has seasonal opening so check before you travel if you are hoping to visit the exhibitions. The walk includes several gentle gradients and follows a mixture of parkland paths and avenues plus paths crossing grass pastures. You will need to negotiate gates, kissing gates, bridges and two stiles. Dogs are welcome on this walking route (it does not enter areas of the park where dogs are prohibited) but please follow local signage to ensure they are on leads in the areas required. You may come across livestock in a couple of the pastures. Allow 2 hours.

Towneley Park is located about 1.5 miles south east of Burnley town centre. The vehicle entrance to the park is through the large gateway on Todmorden Road (A671). This entrance drive is called Park Bridge Road. The walk starts and finishes at the Riverside Car Park (close to the garden centre). Simply follow the entrance road for about one mile (passing the learning centre on your left and then keeping left at two forks) and you will reach this car park on your right (before you reach the garden centre). The parking fee is £1.50 per day (correct Autumn 2018). The nearest post code of BB11 3RQ is for Towneley Hall (rather than the car park) but will at least lead you onto the correct entrance drive.

End point: 53.7747 lat, -2.221 long

The walk begins in the Riverside Car Park, alongside the circular Rotunda building. With the building on your right and car park on your left, walk ahead (with the River Calder running on your right) to reach a T-junction with a parkland avenue. Turn right along this avenue, crossing the river, and it will lead you to Towneley Hall. Today the hall houses the town’s art gallery and museum which you can explore should you wish (opening times vary).

When you are ready to continue, head left to skirt around the left-hand end of the hall building to reach the rear gardens. Turn right and then left on a walkway edging a lawn. Where the path divides, bear left on a woodland avenue taking you to Foldys Cross.

End point: 53.7721 lat, -2.2182 long

At the cross, turn left on a broad woodland walk that follows the perimeter of the estate. After passing the entrance to Towneley Farm, keep right as the path enters Thanet Lee Wood. This will be a particularly rewarding place to visit when autumn colours are at their best.

End point: 53.7737 lat, -2.2137 long

Follow the path through the woodland to reach the southern end of the woods. Stay with the path as it bends left over a stream bridge and continue to reach a signboard with a helpful map showing you to be at Everage Clough, on the northern edge of the wood. Exit the wood and turn right onto a drive which, soon after, turns left along an avenue (with trees on your right). After 200yds, you will see a footpath on the right that enters farmland known as Broad Ing.

End point: 53.7697 lat, -2.206 long

Turn right through the kissing gate onto this path, crossing the farmland of Broad Ing, a wide open space. Keep ahead to leave the estate by way of a kissing gate. Now in the residential area of Walk Mill, keep ahead along Park Road for a little over 100yds, cross Cliviger Mill Bridge and then turn left onto a drive leading into pastures and taking you to Barcroft Hall and Farm.

End point: 53.776 lat, -2.2037 long

As you reach the hall ahead, bear left, cross a cattle grid and aim to the left of the buildings (including the impressive hall) to locate a wooden stile with a Burnley Way waymark. Cross this into pastureland and climb up the incline (keep well to the right of the woods) to a metal kissing gate in a wall. Go through this and continue in the same direction across a broad upland pasture for 350yds to arrive at the farm known as Cliviger Laithe.

End point: 53.778 lat, -2.2177 long

As you reach the property drive, turn left through two wooden gates to follow a (faint) path downhill and re-enter Towneley Park at a stile in a wooded corner. Keep ahead through the woods and cross the River Calder to reach the wide open spaces of the playing fields. Turn right to reach the hall’s main avenue and turn right along this for a few paces to return to the Riverside Car Park on your left where the walk began.
