A circular walk of just over 2 miles, starting from the entrance to Burrs Country Park which lies on the River Irwell, one mile from Bury town centre in Lancashire. You will pass a wide variety of different wildlife habitats, woodlands, ponds and waterways. Towards the end of the walk you will be alongside the East Lancashire Railway and may well see a steam train passing.

This is an easy and pleasant walk with just a few steps and 3 stiles. The path is narrow at times it can be muddy in places and so stout shoes are advisable. There is free parking (and a public house) at the start of the walk. Allow 1 hour.

The walk start at the entrance to Burrs Country Park, approximately one mile from Bury town centre. Grid Ref (E)379577, (N)412738. Approximate postcode BL8 1DA.

End point: 53.6103 lat, -2.3075 long

The walk starts at the entrance to Burrs Country Park. With your back to The Brown Cow public house, go through the metal gate and take the path to the left going round “The Show Ground Field”.

After about 50 yards, turn left through a gate and over the bridge. Stop to have a look at the sculptures. Turn right following the path with the canal on your right and the River Irwell over to your left. Keep right at the fork alongside the canal. Follow this path, past the weir and up the steps.

Continue on the path with fields on the right until the descent down through a gate. Go under the railway bridge and immediately bear left onto a fenced footpath. At the road, turn left passing through stone gateposts and up the hill. Stop to admire the pond and sculptures on either side of the road. Continue along the road, uphill and round a bend. You will reach a residential road. Turn left on the residential road and after passing six houses, turn right down Touch Road.

Walk down Touch Road past the farm and the converted barns and go through the narrow gate with a yellow arrow. Cross the stile and follow the footpath down the field to the stile alongside the railway line.

At the railway line, turn left across the stile and follow the footpath alongside the railway line. This is the East Lancashire Railway where you may well see steam trains.

At the end of the footpath, go down the steps and turn right underneath the railway bridge. You will shortly find yourself outside The Brown Cow and back at the starting point.
