A pretty 4 mile circular walk starting and ending at the village of Itchenor at the edge of Chichester Harbour. The easy walk starts and ends along the foreshore of the harbour with lovely views of the activities taking place on the water with the South Downs as a back drop. The early part of the walk would be suitable for off-road mobility scooters and, although it would be necessary to retrace your route, would be well worth it for the views. There are plenty of seats provided along the early part of the route to sit and take in the scenery. There are two gates and one stile on the remainder of the route. No cattle or sheep were encountered at the time we walked. Allow 2 hours.

Itchenor is situated approximately 5 miles south of Chichester. From the A27 south of Chichester take the A286 Bracklesham Bay and Wittering road. Drive for 3.9 miles to a roundabout in the village of Birdham. Take the second exit on the roundabout to continue on the B2179 towards West Wittering. Drive for half a mile and turn right into Shripton Green Lane signposted to Itchenor. Drive for 1.7 miles to Itchenor. Look out for a road on the left, just before the Ship Inn leading to the car park. The car park is of the pay and display variety and, for guidance, the walk took us just under two hours including a stop of about 15 minutes for a coffee en route. The latitude and longitude of the parking is 50.805167,-0.868705 and the nearest postcode is PO20 7AH. Itchenor is served by the Compass bus company who provide the No 150 bus which calls at Selsey, Bracklesham and Wittering and stops at the Ship pub which is at the top of the car park access road.

From the car park, walk back out of the entrance. Turn right and walk for 85 metres along the access road to reach the main road. Carefully cross the road and turn left to walk on the pavement for 185 metres, heading towards the water and looking out for the Harbour Master's offices housed in a white building on the left at the end of the road.

Turn left to pass the Harbour Master's building, following a a two-way public footpath fingerpost on the left. Walk to the right of a large lifting gantry ahead and onto a gravel path. As the path bears left, you pass a white cottage on the right. There are buildings to your left and a wooden fence on your right. The path quickly narrows and, after 100 metres or so, exits into a boat yard. Walk straight ahead over the concrete apron of the boat yard and follow the two-way footpath sign on the left to continue on the footpath which is directly ahead.

Views of Chichester Harbour now open up on your right with the South Downs beyond. After 40 metres or so, there is a seat to the right with a footpath leading off to the left. IGNORE this left-hand option and continue straight ahead. Shortly ahead the path briefly enters some trees and shrubs before again opening up to views of the harbour as the path moves more directly onto the foreshore itself. Across the water to the right can be seen Cobnor Point. Interesting to note that in 1917 the Wells Aviation Company built flying boats and ran a flying school from there, no doubt the planes taking off and landing on the strip of water between you and Cobnor.

Shortly after crossing a makeshift duck board ‘bridge’ the path enters some trees. After some 300 metres cross a ‘bridge’ consisting of two planks to exit the trees. A further 300 metres brings you to a three-way fingerpost on the right. Turn left here, away from the shore line.

Turning Point to Church

Start point: 50.8025 lat, -0.885 long
End point: 50.7997 lat, -0.8667 long

Pass through a cycle-restricting wooden ‘gateway’. Walk ahead with a hedge on the right and open fields on the left. Half way across the field, the path bears to the right and onto a wider track, again passing through a cycle restricting wooden ‘gateway’. Bear left when on the wider track, which quickly becomes concrete in nature. Stay on this track for just over 600 metres, ignoring a track signed private going off to the right at a point where there is a two-way finger post on the left.

At the end of the track you will see the gable end of a large wood-clad building in front of you. Before you reach this building, your route turns right by a two-way fingerpost and a stile. Pass over this stile and now walk down a narrow path with a flint building on your left and a barbed wire fence on your right. At the end of the building, the path continues now with a short flint wall on the left. Beyond the wall there is a very imposing red brick building. At a further two-way fingerpost, go left to pass through the flint wall and onto a roadway. A short way ahead at a crossroads, turn left to follow a two-way fingerpost on the left. Stay on this tarmac drive for 140 metres and pass through two white posts to reach the road to Itchenor at a T-junction. Ignore a footpath fingerpost on your right. A church can be seen a short distance ahead. Turn right onto the road and walk in the direction of the church. Walk up the road to reach and pass the church.

End point: 50.7993 lat, -0.853 long

Go past the church and continue as the road goes up a slight incline. Ignore the footpath sign on the right just before a pond. Pass the road to The Spinney on the left. At the top of the incline, the road bears round to the right. Look out for a footpath fingerpost on the left pointing the way across a rudimentary bridge over a ditch. (The total distance on the road is 350 metres). Turn left to walk across the bridge and continue for 50 metres or so, where the path opens out with a large farm building on the left. Ahead a two-way fingerpost points the way across a wide grass track between two arable fields. Follow this fingerpost. Towards the end of the field, you will reach a ditch. Walk to the left of the ditch. Shortly pass through a hedge line and into a second field. At the end of this field, at a three-way fingerpost, turn sharply left, almost back on yourself.

End point: 50.8029 lat, -0.8605 long

Walk now with an open field on your left and a wire fence on your right. There are views of Chichester and Dell Quay channel to your right. Towards the end of the field, bear slightly right to briefly enter a small copse with a two-way fingerpost on the left. Continue as the path re-exits the copse to again walk by the field and then shortly leave the field as you pass an electrical transformer on your left. Walk for some 100 metres to reach a small gate. Pass through the gate and turn left onto a tarmac road, Spinney Lane.

Spinney Lane to End

Start point: 50.8029 lat, -0.8605 long
End point: 50.8054 lat, -0.8686 long

Walk down the road (passing some rather tasteful houses) for a distance of 300 metres. On reaching a two-way fingerpost on the right, turn right to follow it and go through a small five bar gate. Walk down the narrow path with a brick wall on the right and a hedge on the left, towards the foreshore which you will reach in about 100 metres. Again lovely views unfold as you walk beside the Chichester and Dell Quay channel with Bosham Hoe on the opposite side of the water.

Continue as the shoreline meanders along and after 450 metres you will reach Itchenor Sailing Club. Turn left at the club to walk down the gravel access drive. Interestingly, we did this walk on New Year's Day and the daffodils to the right of the drive were in full bloom. I’m not sure who was most confused, me or them! At the end of the 100 metres the sailing club drive exits onto the main road opposite the Ship Inn. All that remains is to turn left, walk for a few metres before turning right, crossing the road and walking back down the car park access road.
