Starting in the Oxfordshire village of North Leigh, this pretty and gentle 4 mile circular walk takes you across fields to follow the River Evenlode and visit the excavated remains of the roman villa, including mosaics. The villa, free to enter, is in a delightful location beside the River Evenlode.

You will encounter livestock in some fields, including horses. There are some short stretches of road walking on usually very quiet lanes. It is gently rolling countryside - the only steep stretch (immediately after the roman villa) can be avoided and instructions for this are included at that point. There are 2 stiles, one of which can be avoided. Parts of the walk, especially by the river, can be very muddy in winter. Allow 2 hours.

You can divert to the pub at Stonesfield, adding just over 1.5 miles onto the walk. There are pubs in North Leigh, but these are some distance from the church.

The walk starts at the parish church of St Mary's in North Leigh, post code OX29 6TX. If coming by car, park in the church hall and cemetery car park opposite the church. Buses do run through North Leigh and it would be a 0.5 mile walk to the church where the walk starts.

Start point: 51.8203 lat, -1.4385 long
End point: 51.822 lat, -1.4435 long

Walk up the tarmac lane opposite the church car park, passing the church on your left. After 0.25 miles, cross a cattle grid with a stile on the right, beside a metal five bar gate.

End point: 51.8266 lat, -1.4413 long

Climb over the stile, walk down the field (keeping close to the right-hand side) and through a wooden kissing gate. Cross the shallow valley and continue alongside the hedge on your right.

Go past a gate onto a lane and turn left. After a short distance, take the first right turning onto an unpaved lane, signed Wilcote Farms, Hollycourt with a bridleway sign.

End point: 51.8368 lat, -1.4412 long

At the Wilcote Farms, Hollycourt sign, turn down the unpaved lane and follow it past cottages and farm buildings. Just before the main farmhouse, turn right over a bridge and immediately left. Carry on a short distance, bear left in front of a five bar metal gate and then right, to continue along a clear path running alongside a small stream and valley bottom.

You will come to a lane after 0.25 miles, bear right to join it and almost immediately you will reach a crossroads. Take the right turning (signed towards East End) and within 10 strides or so, turn left onto the footpath signposted towards Stonesfield.

End point: 51.8428 lat, -1.4311 long

Leave the lane, turning left down this footpath signposted to Stonesfield. Follow the path alongside the River Evenlode, through woodland and passing under a brick railway bridge, for almost a mile until you come to stile on the right with a pedestrian gate ahead.

End point: 51.8364 lat, -1.426 long

Go over the stile. If you would prefer to avoid the stile, instead walk ahead through the pedestrian gate and immediately double back through the field entrance to the other side of the stile.

(If you wish to extend the walk to visit the pub in Stonesfield, go through the gate and keep straight ahead across the field to cross a footbridge over the river. Walk straight ahead up a deep track to Stonesfield - the pub is on the far side of the village).

After the stile, walk up the field bearing slightly left towards a hedge. Follow the right-hand side of the hedge. At the end of the hedge, go through the metal pedestrian gate and keep straight ahead on the unpaved farm lane. A short distance after passing over a railway bridge, turn left onto a lane with the roman villa straight ahead.

Start point: 51.8364 lat, -1.426 long
End point: 51.8323 lat, -1.4272 long

At the entrance to the roman villa, go through the wooden kissing gate on the right. Keep the stone wall of the roman villa site on your left until it ends and then cross the field, bearing slightly left, towards the clearly visible gate into the woods.

Follow the path through the woods, with several short steep climbs. The path is very clear through the woods but if in doubt bear right. At a T-junction in the woods, bear right and after a short distance go through a wooden gate onto the road in East End.

(If you want to avoid the short steep stretches in the wood, return to the farm lane and turn left to walk gently uphill towards East End. When the farm lane reaches the main road, turn left to where the gate exits the woods.)

Go through the wooden gate out of the woods and turn left. Walk down the road through East End village until, on the right, there is a clearly visible footpath sign for North Leigh.

Turn right at this footpath sign to North Leigh. Follow the path past houses, woodland and through a scrubby field to a wooden kissing gate. Go through this gate and through woodland and exit onto a fenced path across a field.

At the end of the field, do NOT go through the kissing gate straight ahead. Instead, turn to your right and through an entrance, with a roundel for the Palladium Way on a wooden post, into another field. Go down this field, keeping the fence on your right.

At the end of the field, follow the path round a wooden gate and down a hawthorn tunnel. The path turns right, away form the hawthron tunnel and then left down to a metal pedestrian gate and road junction. Crossing the road junction, keep straight ahead up Church Road to the church and end of the walk.
