This 4.5 mile circular walk in Surrey starts at the free Chantry Wood Car Park, on Pilgrims Way, and proceeds up through Chantry Wood, providing great views of Guildford Cathedral, the Surrey Hills and Shalford. The walk then descends to Shalford Mill (a National Trust Property) and continues on to the River Wey at St Catherine's Lock. It then follows the towpath along the Wey Navigation to Shalford Park, returning back to the starting point at Chantry Wood Car Park.

The walk mainly follows marked footpaths but has a few steep climbs and descents. The paths can be muddy in winter or after rain. The walk passes through several kissing gates, none of which will cause problems for dogs. There maybe cattle or horses in some fields. Allow 2 hours.

The walk starts from the free Chantry Wood Car Park located off Pilgrims Way. Pilgrims Way is accessed from the A281 opposite Shalford Park located between Shalford and Guildford. Approximate post code GU4 8AW.

Start point: 51.2256 lat, -0.564 long
End point: 51.2238 lat, -0.5559 long

Leave the car park heading towards the white Chantry Cottage. Turn right at the cottage and then immediately left and walk towards the Chantry Wood Map on the right. Walk between the Map and a large tree on the left and follow the path leading up on the right-hand side of the woods.

Follow this fairly steep path, past benches on the left and right, all the way up the top of the hill where the path bends left and then right into an open area with a bench. Go to the bench and admire the view of Guildford Cathedral through the trees.

End point: 51.2234 lat, -0.5434 long

With your back to the view, walk towards the main path and turn left. Follow this path, ignoring turns off to the left and right. At the first T-junction, bear right and keep on the main path. Continue on to a crossroads and carry straight on up the steep slope ahead. Keep going on the main path, ignoring turns to the left by keeping to the high ground.

The path will eventually bend left adjacent to a field. Keep on this path along the edge of the woods. Ignore two kissing gates on the right and carry on until you reach a large wooden gate on your right. Go through this gate to leave the woods and continue parallel with the woods until you reach a large open field containing fire pits and disused toilets. Check out the view across the Surrey Hills.

End point: 51.2213 lat, -0.5481 long

Retrace your steps back to the large wooden gate and enter the field in front of the woods (do NOT re-enter the woods). (NOTE: These next two fields may contain cattle). Do NOT follow the upper path close to the woods, instead go diagonally across the field to a kissing gate. Go through the kissing gate and continue diagonally across the next field until you reach a series of benches with a lovely view across to Shalford.

Start point: 51.2213 lat, -0.5481 long
End point: 51.2192 lat, -0.5599 long

Leave the benches and head north on the footpath back towards the woods. Before reaching the woods, turn left through a kissing gate and keep to the path along the top of the field. Keep going to the next kissing gate and go through this (passing some water troughs on the left). Carry on for about 10m and take a path that bears downwards to the left. This is a steep path with fun ski-run type S-bends.

Follow the path to bottom of hill and through another kissing gate, which leads to a large open field on the left. Continue to follow the path to the bottom of the hill. At the T-junction, turn right and continue along the bottom of the field until you reach a path to the left across an open field.

(NOTE: If you want to shorten the walk, instead of turning left here, continue straight ahead to Clifford Manor Road and turn right. Take the footpath on the right adjacent to a large fence, and follow this back to Chantry Wood Car Park).

For the main walk, turn left and follow the path across the open field to East Shalford Lane.

East Shalford Lane to Shalford Mill

Start point: 51.2192 lat, -0.5599 long
End point: 51.2191 lat, -0.5679 long

Cross over East Shalford Lane to reach the footpath just to the left. Go through the gate and turn right, parallel with the Lane. Continue on until you reach a wooden gate. Go through the gate and diagonally cross the next field (which normally contains horses). On the other side of field, pass through a kissing gate and follow the path as it drops down some steps and goes alongside Shalford Mill.

Shalford Mill is an 18th century watermill preserved by the National Trust. This is also where a group of women, Ferguson's Gang, was formed in 1927. Their aim was to raise awareness of the need to protect rural areas and they supported the organisation they considered to be the most dedicated to preserving England’s heritage: the National Trust.

The Mill is open on Wednesdays and Sundays between March and October.

Walk past the mill and continue to the A281 main road. Turn right and walk for 100m (passing the Seahorse pub on the opposite side of the road) until you reach a pedestrian crossing. Cross over, turn left and then immediately right up the Dagley Lane footpath.

Keep to the main footpath as it winds uphill to the left, ignoring other turn-offs. At the top of the hill, on the right is a kissing gate. Go through this gate and down a steep hill to join a raised wooden boardwalk. Keep to the pathway and continue straight on. Follow the path, cross over Riff-Raff Weir and pass in front of Riff-Raff Cottage. Pass in front of the cottage, go through the gate and continue on to reach St. Catherine's Lock. Cross over the Lock to reach the towpath on the other side.

Start point: 51.2197 lat, -0.5753 long
End point: 51.2249 lat, -0.5737 long

After crossing St Catherine's Lock, turn right and follow the towpath for about half a mile. After a couple of meandering bends there will be a large sandbank on the left followed by a wooden bridge across the river.

At the top of the sandbank are the ruins of the 14th century St Catherine's Chapel. (This can be accessed by turning left just past the bridge and going up Ferry Lane. At the top of Ferry Lane turn left and follow the footpath up the hill. When finished, return back to the wooden bridge).

Cross the bridge and turn immediately left then right. Follow the path until it reaches the open area of Shalford Park.

End point: 51.2258 lat, -0.5644 long

Walk straight across Shalford Park until you again reach the A281 main road. Cross at the crossing and continue directly ahead up Pilgrims Way. Continue up Pilgrims Way until you reach the start point at Chantry Wood Car Park on the right-hand side.

Bluebells in the woods are amazing at this time of year.

This was a lovely walk, nice incline gradients with good ground and glorious views of Surrey at the top. Walked 01/03/19.

Worth the climb at the beginning for the lovely views from the top. Another walk with plenty to see along the way. We were spoilt in the warm February sunshine and very little mud at all.
