This 5 mile circular walk starts in the lovely Oxfordshire market town of Woodstock and loops round the valley of the River Glyme up to the outskirts of the pretty village of Wootton and back to Woodstock. If you have time, it is worth diverting into Wootton as it is an interesting and attractive village, which like Woodstock has many references to its gloving cottage industry. The River Glyme is one of the many Cotswolds rivers which flow down to the Thames. In Woodstock, it flows through the lakes of Blenheim Palace before joining the Evenlode which then swiftly joins the Thames.

There are open views and a couple of riverside stretches along the walk. It is an easy-to-follow and "stride out" walk. It is a relatively easy-going route for the most part, with only a couple of short sharp ascents and descents, otherwise just gently undulating contours. There are no stiles to negotiate, just kissing gates and simple pedestrian gates. The walk crosses fields and you may encounter livestock. Allow 2.5 hours.

There are plenty of cafes and pubs in Woodstock; and a village shop and deli in Wootton and a pub on the far side of the village.

The walk starts in the market place in the centre of Woodstock, by the town hall, OX20 1SL. There is roadside car parking and a free public car park, off Hensington Rd, down a turning between the library and fire station, OX20 1JQ. This car park is just a short walk from the market place. There are frequent buses to Woodstock from Oxford, many routed on to Chipping Norton.

End point: 51.8498 lat, -1.3594 long

From the market place in Woodstock, walk up Park Street towards Blenheim Palace, past the Oxfordshire Museum, and turn right into Chaucer's Lane. Go down the steps at the end of Chaucer's Lane to the main road and turn left.

Walk along the main road to the zebra crossing. Cross the road and turn left. After 20 paces or so, just before the Black Prince pub, turn right and down a couple of steps into the water meadows.

Start point: 51.8498 lat, -1.3594 long
End point: 51.8505 lat, -1.3511 long

After walking down the steps into the water meadows, keep straight ahead, keeping the River Glyme on your left. After crossing a footbridge, continue a short distance before entering a small housing estate (Glyme Close) by some garages. Walk past the garages, take the first turning left and then right to exit Glyme Close and meet a T-junction with Brook Hill.

Start point: 51.8505 lat, -1.3511 long
End point: 51.8686 lat, -1.3425 long

Turn left onto Brook Hill. Bear left at the next junction and carry on past the Owen Mumford factory. Keep straight ahead, with the Glyme water meadows on the left and past a cemetery and allotments on the right, until the tarmac ends by a Thames Water site.

Continue ahead past the Thames Water site on the bridleway and national cycle route. Keep on the largely straight bridleway, crossing a road (B4027) and, after 0.2 miles, turn left at the junction with the Oxfordshire Way by a telegraph pole. (A wooden gate and roundel for the Oxfordshire Way is set back on the right-hand side of the junction).

Start point: 51.8686 lat, -1.3425 long
End point: 51.8703 lat, -1.3533 long

Having turned left to leave the bridleway and cycleway, walk along the field edge to a small cluster of houses (Sansoms Barn and Cottage) by the B4027 road. Cross the road and, in the right-hand corner of the opposite lane, go through the footpath-signed hedge gap and diagonally cross the arable field.

Go through a wooden pedestrian gate, across a pasture and exit onto a lane through a wooden five bar gate. Turn left and walk down the lane, across the courtyard between a large house and its outbuildings. From the courtyard, enter a footpath which winds through woodland by the Glyme until you reach a footbridge over the river, with tandem pedestrian gates on the far side.

Footbridge to Williams Hill

Start point: 51.8703 lat, -1.3533 long
End point: 51.8728 lat, -1.3631 long

Cross the footbridge to enter a field. Cross the field diagonally towards the wooden pedestrian gate alongside a wide 5-bar gate. Go through the gate to enter Long Meadow nature reserve and climb gently uphill, with the River Glyme below to your right. Go through a pedestrian gate and through an area of sparse woodland to another pedestrian gate.

Cross the next field, maintaining height, to a gate and a track which leads you downhill to a road on the outskirts of Wootton.

(If you want to visit the village shop, bear right here and go over the river bridge. Follow the road uphill into the village, ignoring left hand turnings until you come to the shop. For the pub, go past the shop and, bearing left, pass the church and then right down Castle Street. At the end of Castle Street, you will see the pub up the road on the left.)

For the main route, at the road turn left and walk a short distance to the signpost for Williams Hill on the left.

Williams Hill to Zion's Hill

Start point: 51.8728 lat, -1.3631 long
End point: 51.8722 lat, -1.3617 long

Turn left up Williams Hill to reach a lane and turn left. Walk along the dirt lane (Top Lane) until you reach gates into a property called Zion's Hill, with a double telegraph post in the field on the right.

Start point: 51.8722 lat, -1.3617 long
End point: 51.8536 lat, -1.3614 long

Turn right at Zion's Hill and walk past the telegraph pole up the field, keeping the hedge on the left. At the end of the field, turn right and almost immediately go left through a hedge gap.

Cross the next field ahead, go through a metal kissing gate, cross another field and cross a lane (Stratford Lane). Cross the next field to a track (by green metal barns) and continue across another four fields until reaching an enclosed playing field and play area.

Cross the play area to exit through a gate and walk down a residential road. Take the first right into Vermont Drive, walk to the end and turn left onto the main road.

Vermont Drive to End

Start point: 51.8536 lat, -1.3614 long
End point: 51.8476 lat, -1.356 long

After turning left out of Vermont Drive onto the main road, you are walking back towards the centre of Woodstock. Further along you will pass the Black Prince pub (which you passed on the outward leg). Just across the road, opposite the Black Prince pub, a plaque identifies the house where the original Blenheim Orange apple tree grew. From this point, simply retrace your steps (crossing the A44 at the zebra crossing, taking the steps up to Chaucer's Lane then turning left at the end) back to the start of the walk.

very nice walk, lots of variation and peaceful green corridors, good long stretches, the 5 miles goes quick, just be prepared for one super steep ascent (i think point 6) but otherwise ok...
