A lovely 6 mile circular walk through rolling north Cotswolds countryside in Warwickshire with some far reaching views. The walk starts in the sweet village of Cherington, right on the northern edge of the Cotswolds AONB, and loops over a hill, passing through the parkland of Weston Park and down to Long Compton. In St John's Church in Cherington, you can play 'hunt the hare' to find the tiny motif in the carving round a tomb; and a previous vicar collected stained glass which has been installed in many of the windows, sometimes as mosaics.

There are a couple of up-hills, but these are not too steep. You will need to negotiate gates, stiles and footbridges. The walk crosses fields with livestock. The road walking is on very quiet lanes; the longest stretch is the private estate drive through Weston park. Allow 2.5 hours.

There are pubs in both villages, a farmhouse teashop in Cherington and a village stores in Long Compton.

The walk starts at St John the Baptist Church in Cherington, Warwickshire, CV36 5HY. There is roadside parking throughout the village.

Walk Sections

Start to Red Brick Farm Building
Start to Red Brick Farm Building

Start point: 52.0267 lat, -1.5765 long
End point: 52.0278 lat, -1.5953 long

The walk starts at St John the Baptist Church in Cherington. Standing on the road facing the church gate, turn left to walk down the lane for a short distance to reach a stile on the left. Go over the stile and walk ahead through two fields, keeping the field edge on your left.

At the end of a row of conifers shielding a farm (at a metal pedestrian gate on the left), turn right and head up the field with the tree line on your left. Before the end of the field, turn left over a footbridge and cross this third field, bearing slightly right. (Ignore another footpath which heads off to the right). At the hedge on the far side, cross into the fourth field (again ignoring another footpath exiting the right corner of this field). Cross the next two fields (fourth and fifth) until entering a large arable field. Head towards a low red farm building on the other side.

(If in doubt, please follow the App GPS map as the choice of footpaths can be confusing).

Red Brick Farm Building to Gatehouse

Start point: 52.0278 lat, -1.5953 long
End point: 52.0224 lat, -1.591 long

At the low red brick farm building, turn left to walk down the farm lane, passing a couple of houses, to reach the main road. Cross the main road and go ahead to enter the Weston Park estate drive.

The drive climbs gently uphill and then bears right at an elegant farm house - a far reaching view opens up on the right towards Shipston on Stour. Continue along the drive until it ends at a gatehouse.

Gatehouse to Bottom of Harrow Hill

Start point: 52.0033 lat, -1.5865 long
End point: 51.9973 lat, -1.5822 long

At the gatehouse, cross the road junction, keeping straight ahead towards Long Compton and walk down the road to reach the outskirts of Long Compton.

Start point: 51.9973 lat, -1.5822 long
End point: 52.0057 lat, -1.5689 long

You can make a detour to visit the pub, shop or church in Long Compton here if you wish. To continue the walk, as you reach the main road (and just after the 30mph sign and road name sign Harrow Hill) turn left into a driveway. At the entrance to the driveway is a post with a cluster of waymark signs on it, including Shakepeare's Way - you will now be following Shakepeare's Way back to the start of this walk.

As the drive splits, bear left and follow a clear wide track which starts to gently climb uphill, away from Long Compton. After 0.4 miles, there is woodland on your left and then the track enters woodland (Whichford Woods) through a gate and continues to climb uphill.

At a T-junction of paths in the woods, turn left and walk up to a road. Turn right and walk a short distance up to a left turning with a sign for Margetts Hill Barn.

Start point: 52.0072 lat, -1.5691 long
End point: 52.0145 lat, -1.5766 long

Turn left at Margetts Hill Barn and walk along the lane to a couple of houses. Follow the path straight ahead between the houses, and Cherington and its neighbouring villages start to come into view in the valley ahead.

Walk down an arable field to a metal gate into a pasture. At the bottom of the pasture are several pedestrian gates and a stile. Go through the right-hand gate.

Start point: 52.0145 lat, -1.5766 long
End point: 52.0267 lat, -1.5765 long

After going through the right of the two gates, keep to the field edge as it bears right. Ignore the first gap in the field hedge and turn left through the second field gap, keeping to the right-hand side of the next field.

When the field edge bears left, stay with the hedge on your right which turns into a clear track with an arable field on your right. Stay on this track through another arable field on your right.

Stay with the track as it enters pasture, eventually becomes a dirt lane and then exits onto the end of a residential road (Berrills Lane) in Cherington. Turn right at the T-junction at the end of Berrills Lane and continue through the village until you reach a road junction. Turn left to return to the church where the walk began.
