A 3.5 mile circular and very easy walk in the Cambridgeshire countryside. The walk follows a gentle river down to Anglesey Abbey and then loops back through fields and woods via Quy Fen. You could easily include a visit to Anglesey Abbey if you wished. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates but there are no stiles on route. It is an ideal walk for dogs with all of it on footpaths and bridleways and no roads. You may come across conservation cattle on the short stretch of path through the fen. It can get quite muddy by the river when it has been raining, so wear suitable footwear. This is Cambridgeshire, so there are no hills! Allow 1.5 hours.

Most people will travel by car via the A14. You will need to leave the A14 at junction 35, which is the A1303 junction. Follow the signs for Stow cum Quy. Then drive through the village until you get to Station Road. Turn left onto Station Road and follow the lane until you see a little parking area on the left, just before the bridge over the river. Park there and then walk over the bridge. The start of the walk is the gate on the right just past the bridge. Nearest post code CB25 9AJ.

Start point: 52.2275 lat, 0.2198 long
End point: 52.2358 lat, 0.2415 long

From the parking area, turn left along the road to cross the river bridge. Immediately afterwards, turn right through the kissing gate to join the riverside path. The first part of the walk follows the gentle-flowing river (with the river on your right) along to Anglesey Abbey. Just follow the river and you can't go wrong. The path is open to start with and then moves into woodland near the Abbey. The path can be quite muddy after rain. If you have a dog that likes water, there is a special dog-friendly entry point to the river so they can cool off there if required.

Continue along the path until you see a bridge over the river. At this point, do NOT cross the river, instead turn left up the broad avenue between the trees. (If you wish, you can visit the Abbey, which is a National Trust property. Just keep following the river rather than turning left and then follow the signs. There is a cafe and toilets there if you need them).

Start point: 52.2358 lat, 0.2415 long
End point: 52.242 lat, 0.222 long

At the end of the avenue of trees, turn left and follow the path through the wood. Just before the field, follow the path to the right until you reach the track and then turn left. Follow the track a little way and then, at the field boundary, turn right and follow another track (called Dam Drove).

At the end of Dam Drove, turn left. There are waymarker posts that will tell you that you are on the Harcamlow Way. Follow the path until you get to a small bridge over a stream and a kissing gate. Go through the gate and you are on Quy Fen.

Note that in the summer months there is frequently livestock grazing on the Fen, so you should keep your dog on the lead, especially if, like ours, it likes rolling in cow pats! Also, you will see a notice with some rules for walking on the Fen, one of which is that nudism is not allowed, so please resist any urge to remove your clothes at this point.

End point: 52.2275 lat, 0.2197 long

Keep to the hedge on your left and cross the Fen to another kissing gate which leads to another track. Follow this track down to a T-junction and then turn left. You will cross the track bed of an old railway line and then the track turns right. Follow it until you see a small kissing gate at the corner of a field, near the road. Go through the gate across the field and you are back at your starting point.
