A 3.4 mile linear walk along the South West Coast Path in Cornwall, starting at Penzance railway station walking along Mount’s Bay to Marazion and finishing at St Michael’s Mount, with the return leg by the U4 bus (approximately every hour but be sure to check the times when planning your walk) or simply retrace your steps. St Micheal’s Mount is only accessible on foot across the causeway when the tide is low so make sure to check the tide times before planning your walk, there is however an amphibious vehicle transfer across when the causeway is closed.

This is an easy walk and is flat all of the way on a mixture of tarmac and gravel paths, it’s best to keep your dog on a lead as the route to Marizon is shared with cyclists. There is the option to walk along the adjacent beach where dogs can run freely and swim all year round. There are no stiles along the route and it is livestock free.

Penzance railway station is located on Wharf Road TR18 2LT and is the terminus of the Cornish Main Line, it can be reached from as far away as London as well as The St Ives Bay Line via St Erth. The bus station has links from all over Cornwall and is adjacent to the railway station. There is also a car park which charges between £2.20 - £6.70 per day depending on the day of the week and the time of year (correct 2019).

Walk Sections

Start to Long Rock
Start to Long Rock

Start point: 50.1217 lat, -5.5324 long
End point: 50.1286 lat, -5.4993 long

Begin outside Penzance railway station and follow a footpath towards the tourist information booth and then the bus station. Cross the bus station to join The South West Coast Path in the direction of Marazion. The walk leads you away from Penzance with the railway station behind you and the railway lines on your left hand side. The route is tarmac for approximately a half mile or so and this is the most uninteresting part of the walk so don’t worry! Please note that the path is also shared with cyclists so be aware, especially with dogs. The tarmac section ends and becomes a normal gravel path which can have puddles in wet weather. As you reach this you will see several out-of-town shops and supermarkets on your left and St Michael’s Mount ahead in the distance on your right. Soon after you will pass the green maintenance sheds of the Great Western railway at Long Rock, continue past these until you reach the Long Rock long stay car park.

Long Rock to The Station House

Start point: 50.1286 lat, -5.4993 long
End point: 50.1286 lat, -5.4905 long

This is the halfway point of the walk. As you pass by the long stay car park you will notice a level crossing on your left-hand side leading to the village of Long Rock. Ignore this and continue straight ahead to Marazion, Cornwall’s oldest chartered town. Keep going passed The Hoxton Special which was formerly a Lifeguard Hut. The white wooden hut is now a quirky coffee shop which also offers tuition for kitesurfing, paddle boarding and even yoga!

End point: 50.1231 lat, -5.475 long

The Station House pub is situated alongside the footpath half a mile from Marazion and is an ideal stopping point to have a bite to eat and a drink whilst enjoying the view across Mount's Bay, either from the beer gardens (or the conservatory if the weather is not so good). As you walk past the Station House there is another cafe at the far end of a large car park called Jordans. Here the footpath becomes tarmac again and runs adjacent to the main road for about 300 yards before passing through some sand dunes, it is quite narrow at this point. Soon after you will enter Marazion, where you will find the causeway on your right-hand side.

Here you will have a fantastic view of the island and causeway, also you will find out the times when you can safely walk across the causeway, although it’s worth finding them out in advance of your visit by visiting their website
https://www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk/plan-your-visit/causeway-opening-times

Be careful when crossing the causeway as the rocky pathway can be slippery. St Michael's Mount is managed by the National Trust and although you can visit the island all year round the castle and gardens are only open to the public at specific times. Also be aware that dogs are allowed on the island but only around the harbour and village area, they are not permitted in the castle, garden or the grounds.

Don’t forget to have a wander around Marazion before heading back to Penzance.
