An easy 6 mile circular walk in Lancashire along quiet country roads, lanes, farm tracks, a golf course and the sea wall. Knott End is a small village and at low tide there are extensive views across the sands and Morecambe Bay. Rock salt lies beneath the ground and used to be extracted by pumping water down bore holes. Some well heads can still be seen through the brine fields. There are 2 stiles and 1 kissing gate to negotiate. The only livestock seen at the time of writing was some poultry in the field through the kissing gate before the farmyard. Allow 3 hours.

The B5270 ends in Knott End where the River Wyre flows into Morecambe Bay. There is a free car park on the left (on Quail Holme Road), just before the ferry crossing at the end of the road. The walk begins at this car park. Nearest postcode FY6 0EA.

Walk Sections

Start to Last House
Start to Last House

Start point: 53.9279 lat, -2.9966 long
End point: 53.9231 lat, -2.9888 long

Go out of the car park to the sea wall and turn right past the L S Lowry stick figure and then past the ferry. Bear right to continue along the road, past the Bourne Arms on your left. When the main road turns inland, keep by the sea front down a private road and then a short footpath. Before the stretch of grass turn right down a short side street and then go straight across the main road into Hackensall Road. Just before the last house on the left take the footpath which goes around the back of this house.

End point: 53.9162 lat, -2.9688 long

After passing this house, the track then straightens out through woods and fields and then through more trees at the foot of a hill. At the end of these trees turn right through a kissing gate and go up the hill with the wood on your right. Climb the stile and go straight ahead through the farmyard and down a stone track which then bends left between two fishing pools. The track becomes a road and passes some cottages. At the end of this road you will reach a T-junction with Back Lane.

Back Lane to The Embankment

Start point: 53.9162 lat, -2.9688 long
End point: 53.9012 lat, -2.9866 long

At the T junction turn right onto Back Lane. Continue on along this road for about a mile, until you come to a small bridge with white railings beside it. Cross the bridge and a few metres later turn right into Corcas Lane, signposted “Private, bridle path only” . After about half a mile (during which time the lane has become a stone track) it bends left by a caravan park. Do NOT follow this left bend, instead turn right signposted Wyre Way.

Start point: 53.9012 lat, -2.9866 long
End point: 53.9206 lat, -2.992 long

Cross the stile onto the embankment and follow its winding course for about a mile. At a junction of tracks with a stile to the right go straight ahead signposted Hackensall Hall. There is a golf course first on the right and then, as the road crosses it, on the left. Follow the road to the right of Hackensall Hall, over a cattle grid to the main gates of the Hall.

Start point: 53.9206 lat, -2.992 long
End point: 53.9278 lat, -2.9975 long

Just past the gates, turn left on a track that goes round the outbuildings and building site. Cross the golf course aiming for a green shelter and then bear right along the edge of the course. Just past two white cottages turn left to the sea wall. Turn right and follow the sea wall back to the car park where the walk began.
