This 4.5 mile rural walk through the Hampshire countryside takes you along both sides of Wallop Brook and through the pretty villages of Over Wallop and Nether Wallop. The walk passes through farmland and around the back of both villages. Although this walk does not have any particular distinguishing features, it is a pleasant ramble in spring when it is made all the prettier with all the blossom in the meadows. You will need to negotiate several stiles and a kissing gate, all of which are fairly dog-friendly. Most of the footpaths are well-marked and easy to follow and the lanes usually very quiet. There is just one busy road (A343) which you will cross twice. The terrain is mainly flat but one section of the track past a farmyard can be very muddy so stout walking boots are recommended. Allow 2 hours.

Over Wallop lies on the western side of Stockbridge in the Test Valley, to the north of the A343 Salisbury Road and about 6 miles from Stockbridge. The walk begins in the village centre on Station Road, close to The White Hart. Approximate post code SO20 8HU. The pub does not open until 12 noon on weekdays, so its car park is quiet then, but at other times it will be polite to park on a nearby residential side road (e.g. Appleton Close SO20 8PA). There is a regular bus service to the village of Over Wallop. Further information on times can be obtained from Andover Tourist Information at www.testvalley.gov.uk.

End point: 51.1429 lat, -1.5979 long

With your back to the White Hart Inn, turn left along Station Road, then turn right onto Salisbury Lane. A little way up the lane on the left there is a footpath sign. Take this path.

Salisbury Lane Footpath to Pillar

Start point: 51.1429 lat, -1.5979 long
End point: 51.1372 lat, -1.5864 long

Follow the footpath through farmland until you reach the A343. Cross this road with care and then take the footpath on the other side. This takes you through what looks like a farm on your right (actually an electronics company). Keep straight on until you see the pillar (pictured) with the large red "Caution Tractors Working" sign immediately ahead of you. This signals the next section of the footpath but the sign for it is on the other side so is easily missed.

Pillar to Flight of Steps

Start point: 51.1372 lat, -1.5864 long
End point: 51.1313 lat, -1.5838 long

Go through the gap past the pillar and take the footpath which runs alongside the hedge on your left. After a while the path becomes a track and you will pass by some farm buildings to your left, where the track can be extremely muddy. At the end of the track you come out on Bent Lane. Follow this road ahead and around the bend to the right (as you might expect!) and a little way up the road you will see a footpath sign on the left up a flight of steps (pictured). Take this path.

Flight of Steps to Ducks Lane

Start point: 51.1313 lat, -1.5838 long
End point: 51.1276 lat, -1.5784 long

Follow the footpath through the fields until it comes out at a junction of several lanes. Follow the road straight on down the hill and, just around the corner to the left, you will find yourself on Duck's Lane.

End point: 51.1248 lat, -1.5764 long

Follow Duck's Lane until you reach a T junction with Five Bells Lane. Turn right then immediately left into Aylwards Way. Follow the road around to the left where you will see a footpath sign (pictured) which leads down behind the houses. Take this path.

Start point: 51.1248 lat, -1.5764 long
End point: 51.1266 lat, -1.5704 long

Follow the footpath which passes by the rear of the houses until it comes out on Church Hill. Turn sharp left down Church Hill until you come out on the High Street.

High Street to Heathman Street

Start point: 51.1266 lat, -1.5704 long
End point: 51.1275 lat, -1.5699 long

Turn left onto the High Street and follow the road through the Square, past the Post Office with the bright red doors and across Wallop Brook. When you reach the T junction with Heathman Street, turn left and walk a little way until you see a footpath sign on your right on the opposite side of the road. Take this path.

Heathman Street to Unnamed Track

Start point: 51.1275 lat, -1.5699 long
End point: 51.1284 lat, -1.5722 long

Follow the path uphill until you reach an unmade track. Turn left here and walk down the track until you reach a T junction with a tarmac road (not named on the map). Turn right onto this road and a little way up on the left you will see a stile.

Start point: 51.1284 lat, -1.5722 long
End point: 51.1292 lat, -1.5723 long

Leave the unnamed track and cross over this stile into the field. After a little way you will see a kissing gate on your right.

Start point: 51.1292 lat, -1.5723 long
End point: 51.1364 lat, -1.58 long

From the kissing gate take the path through the fields, across Knockwood Lane, and through further fields until you come to a T junction with School Lane. Turn right onto this road. A little way up on your left is a footpath sign next to a large chestnut tree.

Chestnut Tree to Stream Crossing
Chestnut Tree to Stream Crossing

Start point: 51.1364 lat, -1.58 long
End point: 51.1433 lat, -1.5845 long

The path passes behind various properties and through a couple of gates, but is fairly well-marked so if you just keep going in the same direction you should not lose your way (remember the GPS map to help you). Eventually you will arrive back at the busy A343 (B3084) which you should cross and take the footpath on the other side. Follow the path as it bears to the right and on your left you will see a large caravan park. Keeping the fence on your left, follow the path round to the right until you see a dip with some trees ahead of you. The path actually takes you through a stream at this point. However, there is no obvious crossing point so it is best if you just keep walking to the right until you reach an open space in the field where the stream goes underground. Cross here and then head left and back onto the path.

Stream Crossing to Footpaths Crossroads

Start point: 51.1433 lat, -1.5845 long
End point: 51.1426 lat, -1.5871 long

Once you have left the field with the stream, the path takes you down to a crossroads of two footpaths. Take the track to your right, with a green sign which says no horse riding.

Footpath Crossroads to End

Start point: 51.1426 lat, -1.5871 long
End point: 0 lat, 0 long

Follow this footpath. This turns into an unmade track and comes out on Orange Lane. Turn left onto Orange Lane and then right onto Station Road. Walk along Station Road past the church on your left until you arrive back at the White Hart Inn where the walk began.
