A 13 mile circular walk from Ewelme in the Chilterns. The route follows long stretches of The Chiltern Way and The Ridgeway.

The walk has several steady climbs and descents throughout plus a few steeper sections. There are no stiles on route, but you will need to negotiate several kissing gates. There are several sections walking along country roads which can be fast moving, so these need particular care and please take care of traffic at these points.

The walk starts from Cow Common recreation ground at the top of Ewelme High Street. Approximate post code OX10 6PG.

End point: 51.6164 lat, -1.0439 long

After approx 300m turn right on the footpath, signposted Chiltern Way. When you get to the lane, turn left. After approx 400m turn left, still on the Chiltern Way. Turn right at the end of the first field, continuing on the Chiltern Way until you reach the edge of a woodland.

Woodland to Ridgeway

Start point: 51.6164 lat, -1.0439 long
End point: 51.6326 lat, -0.9927 long

At this woodland corner, turn left on the Restricted Byway, leaving the Chiltern Way. Continue on the track in the same direction. It becomes a gravel track which joins the Ridgeway. Cross over a lane and continue straight ahead on the Ridgeway.

Ridgeway to Fox and Hounds

Start point: 51.6326 lat, -0.9927 long
End point: 51.618 lat, -0.9538 long

Continue straight ahead along the Ridgeway, crossing one road and continuing on to a junction with second road. At the second road (Howe Road), turn right (leaving the Ridgeway), walk 300m up the road and take the footpath on the left through a kissing gate.

Follow the footpath climbing steadily all the way to the top of the Watlington Hill. At the end of the path, turn right onto the road (Hill Road) for approx 300m to reach Christmas Common. Turn right at the first T-junction and continue to the signed fork (with North End signed left and Nettlebed signed right). The Fox and Hounds is 100m further along right-hand branch.

From the pub, return back to the fork and this time take the branch signed to North End. Where the lane bends left, fork right onto the track. Follow the track (Hollandridge Lane, PS27) for approx 1.5 km to a point just before you reach Hollandridge Farm. Turn right onto the Chiltern Way.

Follow the path through Greenfield Wood to reach a T-junction with the road at Pishill Bottom. Turn right along the road (Patemore Lane) and continue to the T-junction. Turn left (along the B481 towards Nettlebed) and continue to reach Cookley Green.

Follow the path across Cookley Green then go ahead to join Church Lane. Walk along the lane for approx 300m before taking the footpath on the left into a woodland, continuing on the Chiltern Way.

At the end of the woodland, go through a kissing gate and straight ahead down the field to another (metal) kissing gate and on to a tarmac drive.

Swyncombe to End

Start point: 51.6065 lat, -1.0163 long
End point: 51.6157 lat, -1.065 long

Walk straight across the drive and follow the path to the churchyard gate. Go through the churchyard to a gate at the far side, turn left and left again to join the Ridgeway.

After approx 450m (when the Ridgeway goes off to the left) continue ahead on the track along the valley bottom. After approx 600m leave the track and follow the bridleway to the left. At the access track, turn right and follow the track straight ahead, crossing another bridleway, pass the farm buildings (on your right) and then walk straight on, bearing right at a fork in the track until you come to a junction with a lane.

Turn left and walk along the lane for approx 125m before taking the footpath on the right, signposted Ewelme 1⁄2, to Cow Common. Cross the common to return to the car park where the walk began.

This walk really needs looking at -the amount of distance in meters is really out and there are right turns where there should be left turns...luckily we had a map but lots of very fast roads to walk along. Lovely countryside though.

ADMIN RESPONSE: Many thanks for your comment and sorry to hear you had problems on your walk. The best way to follow all iFootpath guides is to use the iFootpath App's live GPS map that will show the exact route and your own position relative to it (this really helps with navigation). We would like to reassure you that all iFootpath walks are reviewed for accuracy before publishing - particularly to check lefts and rights. We have just repeated the review for this walk and they all appear to be correct compared with the GPS map. We have also reviewed the distances given in metres (these are only ever an estimate from the author) and have found only two of them needed correcting - thank you for drawing that to our attention. The road walking within this walk is mentioned in the introduction, but further to your comment we have added an extra note to mention that the traffic can be fast moving. Many thanks again for getting in touch.
