A 5 mile circular walk from the idyllic village of Hutton-le-Hole in North Yorkshire. This walk is ideal if you want a taste of the wild North York Moors, stunning views and a couple of relatively steep climbs, but also want the comfort of being able to stop off at two of the most beautiful villages on the North York Moors.

The terrain is medium difficulty, with some climbs uphill on grassy paths. There is also a short section of road walking. There are no stiles on route, only gates, and there are plenty of empty fields and woods for your dog to explore. You will come across sheep on the moors and in Hutton-le-Hole. Ryedale Museum in Hutton-le-Hole is dog-friendly. There are public toilets in the car park in Hutton-le-Hole. Allow 2.5 hours.

Hutton-le-Hole is signposted from the A170 Scarborough to Thirsk road, between Pickering and Helmsley. It is served by Moorsbus M3, operated by Arriva from Helmsley via Kirkbymoorside. The walk starts and finishes in the pay and display car park on Moor Lane at the northern end of Hutton-le-Hole village. Approximate post code YO62 6UA.

End point: 54.3042 lat, -0.9044 long

Leave the car park and walk back through the village, passing the Ryedale Folk Museum to your left. At a public footpath sign, opposite the village hall, turn left through a gate and follow the path left, then right through a waymarked gate into a field. Follow the grassy path straight ahead through several waymarked gates along the edges of fields – where there is plenty of space for your pooch to have a good romp round, but keep an eye out for sheep here.

Follow the path to the trees, and pass through a kissing gate and over a footbridge onto a well-defined path which climbs through the woods. Pass through a gate onto another grassy path with good views of the moorland to the left. Continue ahead to a road.

Road to Lastingham Village

Start point: 54.3042 lat, -0.9044 long
End point: 54.3052 lat, -0.8804 long

Turn right and follow the road, using the wide grass verge where possible. Just before the road bends to a stone bridge, turn left following a green and white public footpath sign to a gate ahead. At this point, dogs are not allowed on the Access Land (the areas to the sides of the path) so keep Pooch on the lead and keep to the footpath. Pass through the gate onto a grassy path, which bears round to the right on the edge of the moorland – keeping a wire fence to the right.

At a public footpath sign, follow two waymarker arrows and head towards the left-hand side of the trees ahead, keeping a dry stone wall to the right as the path continues. Drop downhill to Hole Beck, and cross it (it’s usually quite shallow), before following the path steeply uphill on the other side.

After emerging onto moorland, and at a junction with a seat, follow the sign to Lastingham and head downhill through a gate towards the quiet, pretty village.

Lastingham Village to Spaunton Village

Start point: 54.3052 lat, -0.8804 long
End point: 54.2997 lat, -0.8875 long

Head through the village following the sign to Cropton, but turn off the road straight away to cross a bridge over Ings Beck to a little tarmacked road in front of a row of pretty cottages.

Keeping the beck to the left, head uphill towards a green and white footpath sign on the right (before the farm at the end of the lane). Take this path uphill following a waymarker through a gate into a woodland area, where Pooch may once again be let free. Continue uphill following a waymarker sign to the left while keeping a small ravine and wire fence to the right. Pass through a waymarked gate, and put your dog on the lead before emerging on to a road. Crossing the road, head for Spaunton, about 0.25 miles away.

Spaunton Village to End

Start point: 54.2997 lat, -0.8875 long
End point: 54.3029 lat, -0.9177 long

Continue through the village before turning downhill at a right-hand bend. Take an immediate left to follow a public footpath sign across a cattle grid towards Grange Farm. Following the waymarkers and sticking to the clear track, pass through the farm and after two right-angled left turns, pass a barn to the right.

With the Vale of Pickering in front, turn right at a waymarker attached to a post on to a wide grassy path with plenty of space for your dog to run around in – Izzy certainly loved it here!

Follow the path as it turns left then right at right-angles and continue downhill into the woodland, passing an old stone wall on the left. The path bears left at a waymarker arrow to another waymarker pointing ahead and right. Follow the path to the right and head downhill on a grassy path through a waymarked gate, continuing on through bracken before following another waymarker to the right towards a fence.

Pass through the waymarked gap in the fence and another gap before the path meets a stream to the right. Pass through a waymarked gate in sight of the familiar white painted fences of Hutton-le-Hole, and turn right through the village back towards the car park, or stop off for some well-deserved refreshments first.

Great walk but stream was a bit tricky and some climbs very muddy. But it was January!

Excellent varied walk, well described - penultimate paragraph - update - missed turn to right off hollow lane, as way marker now bent over, and there is now a small plantation of trees on the first part of the grassy bank,
