A 4.5 mile circular walk from Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. The walk explores stretches of the Grand Union Canal and the River Avon as well as passing the historic Warwick Castle and St. John's House Museum near to the centre of Warwick. During the first part of the walk, you will enjoy a short section of The Millennium Way where it follows the Grand Union Canal.

The route follows a mixture of roadside pavements and river or canal side paths and is relatively flat. There are no stiles on route but you will need to negotiate some flights of steps. The walk can be completed in 2 hours it is better to take at least a half day, so that you can explore some of the historical sites and amenities along the way.

The Millennium Way is a beautiful 100 mile walk in the heart of England, from Pershore in Worcestershire to Middleton Cheney in Northamptonshire. The route was created by the 41 Club as a community project, with something to offer every walker or rambler across Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. This is one of 44 circular walks, each of which incorporates a section of the Millennium Way and is published in partnership with 41 Club.

The walk starts and finishes at the car park adjacent to Victoria Park on Princes Drive in Royal Leamington Spa. Approximate post code CV31 3PX. The route passes Warwick Rail Station so you can adjust the walk to start and finish at this point if you are coming by train.

Walk Sections

Start to Grand Union Canal

Start point: 52.2863 lat, -1.5476 long
End point: 52.2827 lat, -1.546 long

From the car park entrance, cross Park Drive using the pedestrian crossing then go right to pass under the left-hand arch of the viaduct and proceed up Princes Drive. Pass under the railway bridge to reach the large roundabout. Stay on the pavement, going to the left of the roundabout and entering Old Warwick Road, then cross the road via the pedestrian crossing which is just a few yards along. Turn right (back towards the roundabout) and after 40 yards take the entrance left to the towpath of the Grand Union Canal. Go right to keep canal on your left-hand side. You have now joined The Millennium Way.

Grand Union Canal to Warwick Rail Station

Start point: 52.2827 lat, -1.546 long
End point: 52.2854 lat, -1.5805 long

Stay along the Grand Union canal towpath and go under Bridge 43, then past The Moorings pub. Continue for approximately 1.5 miles and, after passing under Bridge 49, turn right up the slipway to reach the main road. (Here we leave the Millennium Way.) Turn right on the main road to cross the bridge over the canal, heading into Warwick.

Continue along the main road to pass under the railway bridge and passing The Railway pub on your left. Continue past the Great Western pub and the entrance to Warwick Railway Station.

Start point: 52.2854 lat, -1.5805 long
End point: 52.2814 lat, -1.5825 long

Pass the entrance to Priory Park and continue to the main road junction. Cross over the road via the pedestrian crossing and go right past St John's House (a museum with free entry). Just past St. John's House at the junction of three roads, take the middle road of Smith Street (a road with some independent shops and a wide range of places to eat). Note that The Roebuck Inn on your right is Warwick's oldest public house, dating back to 1470, and is also dog friendly.

At the top of the road is the old East Gate into Warwick with St Peter’s Chapel on top. At the top Smith Street, turn left down Castle Hill to the roundabout. Cross the roundabout to continue down the A425, passing St. Nicholas’ Church on your left.

Note the entrance to Warwick Castle on the right and the picturesque Mill Street to the left of this entrance. Walkers may wish to divert from the walking route to walk into Mill Street and view the cobbled street with impressive timber framed buildings to either side (pictured). This street was one of the few areas to survive the Great Fire of 1694, which destroyed most of medieval Warwick. Mill Street was the original entry to Warwick, over a medieval Avon bridge, the remains of which can be seen from Mill Garden (entry by donation to charity in summer) at the end of the street. This fine garden also provides a spectacular view of the castle and weir.

Returning to the walk route, continue past St. Nicholas’ Church, down the main road (Banbury Road) to pass the main entrances to St Nicholas’ Park. Just a few yards before reaching the bridge, you will be taking the flight of steps left (signed Centenary Way) into the park. However, before you do so, take a short detour onto the bridge and this will give you the iconic view of Warwick Castle (pictured). Return and take the flight of steps into the park. At the bottom of the steps, go past Warwick Boats to find the riverside path.

End point: 52.2865 lat, -1.5477 long

Continue along the path with the river to your right (a lovely picnic spot). Soon you will reach a large footbridge spanning the river (do not cross this bridge) and here you should cross a cycle track and veer slightly right on the grass track with the river on your right and the rear of houses on your left. Soon you arrive a little closer to the river to walk along a pleasant tree-lined riverside track. Continue on under the railway bridge to reach the viaduct. Go under the arch of the viaduct then go immediately left to find the metal steps which will take you up to the canal towpath. (You have now rejoined the section of the Millennium Way which you walked earlier.)

Go left on the towpath (with the canal on your right) to go under Bridge 45. After approximately 150 yards, take a footpath left (signposted Link to Princes Drive) and continue along the narrow track between fences (with the railway in a cutting to your right). Eventually you will rejoin the river on your left. Stay ahead to pass by a weir along a narrow track when a viaduct soon comes into view. Leaving the riverside walk here, you will emerge onto the main road. Take the pedestrian crossing to cross road back into the car park adjoining Victoria Park.
