A 3 mile walk around Godrevy Point on the north coast of Cornwall. This is a beautiful and popular walk both summer and winter. In the winter (Nov to March) this is arguably one of the best places in UK to see seals and their pups, on the beach in Mutton Cove and surfing the waves out around the Cornish coast. In summer, the beaches and water are enjoyed by human surfers and bathers. Along the way you will see Godrevy Island Lighthouse (thought to be the inspiration for 'To the Lighthouse' by Virginia Woolf, who spent many summer holidays in St Ives) and an Iron age barrow with lovely views from the headland. You can extend the walk to go as far as you like along the South West Coast Path and it makes a great sunset picnic spot.

This is a relatively easy flat amble, apart from a slight hill up to the cove. The terrain is not too bad even when muddy, as the sand drains well so trainers would be ok for this walk. The walk does follow the edge of cliffs so take particular care with children and dogs. There is one low stone step/stile (on the return leg) and one kissing gate, but if you need to avoid these you can still enjoy a good walk. You may come across ponies grazing on the heathland. Keep quiet when near the Mutton Cove and be careful not to let dogs disturb the seals. If you do choose to swim, only swim near the lifeguard station when the lifeguards are on duty. Allow 1.5 hours.

From Hayle or Camborne take the B3301 to Gwithian and then follow the National Trust brown tourism sign to Godrevy and park in the National Trust car park (fees apply). There are also a few spaces further along the road but, unless you are out of season, they are likely to be full. There is a boardwalk onto the coastal path from the car park. Approximate post code TR27 5ED.

From the car park, walk onto the boardwalk and on to the coastal path. Follow the path until the end where it joins a road. Walk up the hill and follow the tarmac road as it bends right past the public toilets.

Continue in the same direction, heading up the grass slope to reach the cliff top. At the wooden barriers, look down to see Mutton Cove. In winter this is a popular spot for seals, so be careful not to disturb them.

Turn right to join the South West Coast Path with the sea on your left. The path leads you through a gate and into an area of heath known as the Knavocks, where you may come across grazing ponies. The mix of heathers, gorse, grasses, flowering plants and bare ground is home to a surprising number of animals from bees, birds and butterflies to lizards, adders and foxes.

Make your way to the trig point where, on a clear day, you can just see Mount's Bay on the south coast, with glimpses of the top of St Michael's Mount.

You can walk along the coastal path as far as you like if you wish to extend the walk, then retrace your steps back to the trig point.

End point: 50.2402 lat, -5.3935 long

Turn round and retrace your steps, following the path back out through the gate and down to Mutton Cove. This time do not take the path to the public toilets, instead stay with the coastal path onto the headland.

Here you will have great views of the Godrevy Island Lighthouse and there is also an Iron-age burial mound (or barrow).

Continue around the headland, with the sea on your right, and then walk back along the coastal path to reach the car park. Along the way you may want to visit the lovely beach.

Really nice walk. Not difficult but very scenic and enjoyable. We decided to walk all the way round instead of go back on ourselves but doesn't really matter too much. The walk took us about an hour with a few stops to look at the amazing views. Car park was £3 which goes to the National Trust. There are other free spots to park at if you don't want to pay. Overall it is a lovely walk.
