A 3.5 mile there and back walk along the beach from Sandsend to Whitby in North Yorkshire. There’s nothing like a bracing seaside walk to blow the cobwebs away, be it windy, sunny or raining – we all love it and so do our dogs! This is a great long beach for you and your dog to run around on and you can stop for tea breaks at the beginning, middle and end – what more could you want? You can be as laid back or as energetic as you like here, and you have the added benefit of walking towards Whitby Abbey, made famous in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.

This is a simple beach walk so the terrain is easy, but you will need to negotiate some steps to access the beach. You also need to check the tide times to ensure you don’t get cut off, these are displayed on the side of the shop next to Sandsend Cafe or you can look them up in advance to make sure you time your visit to coincide with low tide. This whole length of beach is dog-friendly from 1 October to 30 April; that’s Sandsend Beach, along Upgang Beach to the south all the way down to Whitby Sands’ beach huts (from where you can join the cliff path to visit Whitby if you wish). Parts of the beach are closed to your dog from 1 May to 30 September; north from a small area of the beach in front of the gallery, where the beck flows into the sea. Allow 1.5 hours for the beach walk – or longer if you want to visit Whitby.

Sandsend is situated a few miles north of Whitby on the A174 to Saltburn. The walk starts by Sandsend Cafe on the sea front. Parking is free on Sandsend Road or there is a pay and display car park in Sandsend. You can also access the start point via public transport. Take the bus from Whitby Bus Station to Sandsend, the journey time is just over ten minutes. The service runs every half hour (every hour on Sundays). Approximate post code YO21 3SY.

NOTE: Remember to check the tide times before you set off.

From the Sandsend Road take the steps past the Sandside Cafe and go down to the beach, turn right at the bottom of the steps to join the beach. With the sea across to your left, you will see Whitby Pier in the distance.

Walk along the beach for about 2 miles until you see the Whitby beach huts and the North Beach Cafe. Here you will also see the No Dogs from 1 May to 30 Sept sign.

End point: 54.5018 lat, -0.6686 long

At this point you have two choices. If you wish to visit Whitby, join the tarmac path by the beach huts that runs above the beach. Follow this up to the cliff top, from where you can explore the town. Otherwise, you can turn back and return to Sandsend either by the beach or the path above.

Remember...the best way of following our walking guides is to use the iFootpath App (iOS and Android) where you will have all the information in the palm of your hand and see your exact location on the live map as you travel. You can also add comments, photos, ratings and track your own routes.
