A 1.5 mile circular walk around the Kilburn White Horse in North Yorkshire. If you and your pooch love a short sharp start to get the blood pumping, then this little walk is for you. Once you’ve done the climb, you are rewarded with superb views of the Vale of York and there are even some woods for you to explore on the way down.

The walk begins with a long steep climb including several flights of steps. There is a hand rail to help on the steepest sections. After the initial climb, it is all level and then downhill. There are no stiles on route and the route is free from livestock. Allow 1 hour.

The walk starts at the dedicated Kilburn White Horse car park which is free and located on Low Town Bank Road. From A19 York to Thirsk road, follow signs to Kilburn then brown signs direct you to the White Horse car park. Nearest post code is YO61 4AN, but this is not the exact location so follow the signs (not your Sat Nav) once you are nearby.

Walk Sections

Start to White Horse
Start to White Horse

Start point: 54.2239 lat, -1.213 long
End point: 54.2249 lat, -1.2122 long

From the car park, follow the sign for the White Horse Bank Walk at the bottom of the stone steps. Head up the steps, some are quite steep and the smallest of dogs may struggle but Izzy had a go good and she really enjoyed it! There are great views behind you across the Vale of York as the White Horse itself comes into view to the left.

At the top of the steps, pause and turn left to look down on the top edge of the White Horse itself and enjoy the panoramic views to the west. The White Horse is a figure in the hillside of Sutton Bank and was made by removing the top soil to show the limestone underneath. The horse covers about 1.6 acres and on a clear day can be seen from north Leeds.

White Horse to Gliding Junction

Start point: 54.2249 lat, -1.2122 long
End point: 54.2302 lat, -1.211 long

Continue along the path, keeping the carving to the left. Close up, the White Horse is disappointing – views are far more rewarding from the approaches. There is a roped fence to your left, keep ahead – ignoring another path to your right, dogs will be fine off the lead but beware the end of the runway belonging to the gliding club. It is a good idea to keep your pooch under close control or on a lead here – especially when the winch is despatching gliders into the sky.

On reaching the glider information sign to the right you will see a red waymarker post pointing the way along a path to the left, heading downhill into the trees.

Gliding Junction to End

Start point: 54.2302 lat, -1.211 long
End point: 54.224 lat, -1.2131 long

Take this sharp left turn. Head down the rocky eroded path with a fence handrail to the right and trees to the left. At the bottom of the slope continue over another small rise and you’ll reach a staggered T-junction with a red marker post in front of you. Turn left to join this path.

Keep ahead on this path, all the way to the car park where the walk began. There is a large grassy picnic area with tables and seats in the car park, where dogs can have a romp around.

Remember...the best way of following our walking guides is to use the iFootpath App (iOS and Android) where you will have all the information in the palm of your hand and see your exact location on the live map as you travel. You can also add comments, photos, ratings and track your own routes.
