A 4 mile mountain climb near the Spittal of Glenshee, in the southern Cairngorms in Perthshire. Ben Gulabin translates as the mountain of the curlew. It rises steeply above the Spittal of Glenshee, but this version of the climb uses a shorter and more straightforward route to the summit, rewarding you with a beautiful view back down the glen.

The route is steep and the terrain can be uneven and eroded in part. There are no stiles, just a single gate to negotiate. The route is only suitable for summer walking, as it is subject to snow in the winter which would require an ice-axe, crampons and the knowledge, experience and skill to use them correctly. Allow 2.5 hours.

The walk starts alongside a farm gate (where a track begins) on the A93 Old Military Road, about 1.5km north of the Spittal of Glenshee. There is parking for a couple of cars. The post code PH10 7QF will take you to the Spittal of Glenshee, from where you will need to head north. There is no public transport access for this start point (the nearest bus is at the Spittal of Glenshee (Sat only) with Traveline Scotland).

End point: 56.8369 lat, -3.463 long

As you drove through the Spittal of Glenshee, you may have noticed that the slopes above to Ben Gulabin looked forbiddingly steep. You will be pleased to know that this climb is easier, starting about 1.5km north along the A93 (at the start of a rough track on your left). There is space for a couple of cars to park, but please make sure you have not blocked the gateway. Begin by going through the gate and heading up the track. The beautiful view up the glen to The Cairnwell (the most prominent of the group of three Munros on the west side of the Cairnwell pass) improves with every step you take.

Eventually the track curves round to the left and crosses the Allt a' Charnaich (a stream or burn). On the hillside just to the north of this point is the remains of a ski tow. The local ski industry is now concentrated at the head of the glen, so little remains of the tow and other infrastructure here. On OS maps, you will see Gulabin Hut marked; this was the ski hut but little remains of it.

Stay with the main track until you reach a junction with the start of a track that branches off left, straight up Ben Gulabin. (This forms an obvious scar on the hillside).

Gulabin Track to Right Turn

Start point: 56.8369 lat, -3.463 long
End point: 56.8326 lat, -3.4693 long

Turn left to take this track and follow it as it climbs steeply, directly towards the summit of Ben Gulabin. Eventually the gradient begins to ease and you reach the heathery plateau of Ben Gulabin. The track has dwindled to a path. You will reach a small junction in the path.

Right Turn to Western Summit

Start point: 56.8326 lat, -3.4693 long
End point: 56.8326 lat, -3.4759 long

Follow the main path when it turns right to head towards the Western Summit. The Western Summit is marked with a cairn that stands on a small rocky outcrop. You will be rewarded with a great view ahead, to the western half of the Mounth Mountains.

Western Summit to Eastern Summit and End

Start point: 56.8326 lat, -3.4759 long
End point: 56.8269 lat, -3.4655 long

After you have finished enjoying the view, return across the plateau to the path junction. It is now worth making a short detour (by turning right) to visit the Eastern Summit. Here you will have another great view, this time looking down Glen Shee to Mount Blair.

Return across the plateau once again to reach the path junction. Take the path (which turns into a track) that you used for the ascent. As you reach the junction with the main track, bear right to join this. Follow the track all the way back down, crossing Allt a' Charnaich along the way. The track will lead you back down to the parking lay-by where the walk began.
