A 5.5 mile circular walk from the small town of Henley-in-Arden in Warwickshire. The walk takes us across mostly flat farmland with just a few gentle inclines. It is very suitable for a gentle ramble before arriving back in Henley for some well-deserved refreshment. The walk incorporates a section of the Millennium Way, where you will be guided by the distinctive black Millennium Way waymarkers.

The route includes only gentle gradients but can be muddy in parts. You will need to negotiate several gates plus about 15 stiles (some of which are enclosed and so dogs will need a lift over). You may come across livestock (including cattle) in some of the fields. There is about a mile stretch along a quiet lane and you will also need to cross a couple of roads that can be busy. Allow 3 hours.

The Millennium Way is a beautiful 100 mile walk in the heart of England, from Pershore in Worcestershire to Middleton Cheney in Northamptonshire. The route was created by the 41 Club as a community project, with something to offer every walker or rambler across Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. This is one of 44 circular walks, each of which incorporates a section of the Millennium Way and is published in partnership with 41 Club.

Henley-in-Arden is located about 9 miles west of the county town of Warwick. If you are coming by train, the rail station is very close to the start point. The walk starts from the church of St John the Baptist, situated on the corner of the High Street and Beaudesert Lane in Henley-in-Arden. If you are coming by car, it is usually possible to park for up to 4 hours at the top of Beaudesert Lane, but please check the restrictions. Approximate post code B95 5BA.

End point: 52.289 lat, -1.7961 long

With your back to St John the Baptist church (on the corner of High Street and Beaudesert Lane in Henley-in-Arden), we set off on the Millennium Way and go right past the Guild House. After a few yards, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and go left along the High Street for approximately 30 paces to turn right up an alleyway signed to The Station. (You will soon see the distinctive black Millennium Way waymarkers that will guide you along the first half of the walk.)

Stay along the alleyway and through the car park of the Swan Pub. Continue following signs to the Station (into Swan Croft). At the end of the alleyway, cross the road (bearing slightly left) then go up the slope on the right to cross the railway bridge. Continue forward on a fenced path with allotments on both sides and take the metal kissing gate. Go ahead through a further metal gate and then along a tree-lined passage to take another metal gate. Ignore the kissing gate immediately on the right, instead stay ahead (with a fence on your right) to find a footbridge with metal rails.

Cross the footbridge over a ditch to reach a kissing gate. Take this gate and go ahead along an enclosed field edge path (with a hedge on your left and a wire fence on your right) and into a sunken way up to a stile. Cross the stile, turn immediately left and go up the steps to reach a field. Go right, up the field and over the summit, then continue down. Take a fence stile then a further stile to emerge to the road, just opposite Well Cottage.

Start point: 52.289 lat, -1.7961 long
End point: 52.2803 lat, -1.8219 long

Cross the road then head up the path to the right of Well Cottage (taking a moment to look down the old well). Cross the interesting stile in the brick wall, to the right of a gate. Go ahead over a stile into a small orchard. Continue forward over a stile into a paddock and cross another stile into a field. Go diagonally left down the field, keeping the hedge to your right, to reach the field corner. Cross the stile and go right down the steps then left across a culverted ditch. Cross another stile then head forward to a metal footbridge over a stream.

Turn diagonally right across the field to pass a marker post and on to a stile in the hedge. Cross the stile and go diagonally left across the field to cross a stile in the fence enclosed hedge. Continue diagonally left to take another stile by a gate in the second fence-enclosed hedge. (There is a commemorative wooden bench here if you would like to sit a while and enjoy the view)

Go diagonally right to cross a stile and wooden-planked footbridge over a deep ditch. Continue forward to cross a stile in the next hedge and stay ahead towards the field corner gap (by a solitary oak tree). Take the gap and continue along the field edge, with a hedge on your right. Go through the gap in the hedge at the field corner and stay along the next field (with the hedge still on your right). At the field corner, go through the gap in the hedge to reach a lane, Chesters Green Lane. (Here we leave the Millennium Way).

Start point: 52.2803 lat, -1.8219 long
End point: 52.2858 lat, -1.781 long

Turn left and walk gently up the lane for approximately 0.75 miles, passing by the edge of Five Acre Wood. Continue past a farm to where a side road joins from the right. Ignore the side road and continue forward along the lane for about 250 yards to take a waymarked public footpath on your left. Head along the track and stay ahead with a hedge on your left. Where the hedge ends, continue ahead on the wide grassy path. Go through the metal gate ahead and continue along (with a hedge on your right).

Where the hedge turns slightly right, stay ahead to take the mid hedge kissing gate (just to the right of a tree). Stay ahead on the enclosed path to take the next kissing gate into a field. Bear right here and continue along the field edge (with a wire fence on your left and a hedge on your right). On reaching the field corner, go through a metal gate and continue ahead on a grassy track between tall hedges. Stay ahead past an open hay barn to pass through the next metal gate to reach a T-junction of tracks. Cross over the track and go forward to take a metal gate, then turn left to go with a wire fence on your left. Continue along to eventually take a stile to the road.

Cross the road and take the stile opposite, continuing up the slope with a hedge and trees on your left. At the top of the slope, take the metal kissing gate and go ahead between wooden fences to take a wooden gate (just to the left of farm buildings). Go ahead (but avoid walking into the drive of the private property) to find and take a small gate in the fence. Go a short distance with the fence on your left to exit via a gate in the corner. Turn right onto the track to cross a railway bridge. Stay ahead on the track to pass a school building on your right until you reach the main road, Stratford Road.

End point: 52.2922 lat, -1.7781 long

Turn left onto the main road and, when you reach the traffic lights, go straight over the crossroads and continue into Henley High Street. As you continue up the High Street back to your starting point, you will find the famous Henley Ice Cream parlour on your left and this is always worth a visit. Soon you will arrive back at St. John the Baptist church where the walk began. There are numerous pubs and restaurants in Henley for refreshments.

Agree about the bullocks. Chased me and a friend around a field. Hannah it must have been you I met on that day who recommended this app.

ADMIN RESPONSE: Sorry to hear you were chased by bullocks. Of course this will depend on the time of year, as cattle are often put into indoor barns over winter. If you felt threatened by them, then it is worth you reporting the incident to the local county council. They can inform the farmer who may not be aware the bullocks are being so reactive.

An enjoyable walk through some quiet farm fields. Small amount of pleasant road work and beautiful views make this a relaxing walk however slightly challenging with some uphill work and plenty of gates and stiles. You may find some bullocks in two large fields you encounter towards the end of the walk. These seemed quite inquisitive and came for a closer look but more interested in the dog than me. I'd definitely do this one again in the summer months.

Funny step over to follow the footpath at beginning of the walk. This was immediately after crossing railway bridge and road. It may make you think your entering someone's private drive. I got confused a little here. x
