This 6 mile circular walk follows the Berkshire recreational route signs, starting and finishing at Aldermaston Wharf tea rooms. The first half crosses the River Kennet and then gently climbs through farmland. The second part mostly follows the hilltop, giving good views down into the valley. The final part is along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal. There are a few, very quiet road sections, but most of the walk is along easy to follow and marked paths. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates plus two stiles and you may be sharing one field with cattle or horses. (The tea rooms are closed for refurbishment from Oct 17 to Jan 18, but it is still possible to park and follow this route). Allow 3 hours.

Aldermaston Wharf is located just off the A340, close to its junction with the A4 Bath Road. The walk starts and finishes from the Canal Visitor Centre and Aldermaston Wharf tea rooms pay and display car park. The parking fee is £2 for 4 hours (correct Oct 2017) and the fee is payable at the adjacent tea room when this is open and via the honesty box at other times. Approximate post code RG7 4JS.

End point: 51.394 lat, -1.1296 long

From the car park, re-join the main road and turn left. Cross the canal swing bridge and bear left down Mill Lane. Continue almost to the end and, just after the trout farm, take the narrow footpath on the right. You will take several small bridges across the Kennet and after a short distance further arrive at a field where the path branches in several directions. The Kennet has several branches near the mill. There is a fish ladder at one branch. This first part of the walk is the only urban part, passing houses along Mill Lane.

End point: 51.3902 lat, -1.1185 long

Take the path branch that goes almost straight ahead (about 11 o'clock) and follow the path towards Padworth College on top of the hill. After crossing a small stile, go up the hill (this field may be holding cows or horses), and arrive at the farm. Go round the farm on the paved road, bear left towards the church, then right and up the gravel track to the main road. If you feel like a short detour the track ahead takes you round a farm that has interesting animal breeds. There are feed buckets tied to the fence so that you can feed the animals if you wish.

End point: 51.3949 lat, -1.112 long

Turn left and continue along the road. Go over a crossroads and you will arrive at a farm where the road bears right. Enter the farm and turn left between two farm buildings. Shortly down this track is the footpath through a gate on the right.

Start point: 51.3949 lat, -1.112 long
End point: 51.4058 lat, -1.102 long

Go diagonally across the field, down the slope to a gate in the corner. Go right and follow the track until you reach a road by a smart house.

Road to Canal

Start point: 51.4058 lat, -1.102 long
End point: 51.4186 lat, -1.1 long

Turn left and stay on the road until you reach a junction. Cross the road and go through the stile dead ahead. Stay on the marked path (it goes downhill into the corner after the first field) until you exit a narrow path onto a road. Turn left on the road and continue to the junction with the Kennet and Avon Canal at Tyle Mill.

End point: 51.4008 lat, -1.135 long

Continue on the canal towpath (this changes sides once) until you reach Aldermaston Wharf. Walk past ABC Leisure group car park to return to the start point, or through the tea room garden when it is open.
