This 6 mile circular walk takes in the countryside around Beech Hill as well as an urban section through Spencers Wood in Berkshire. New developments, such as a PV (solar) farm and new housing developments can be spotted along the way. The walk is mostly level using public footpaths and tracks. In the urban section you will be following roadside pavements. On a short section of road walking, there is a grass verge that can be used for walking. You will need to negotiate a few stiles plus some gates and fence gaps and you may come across livestock in a couple of places. Allow about 2.5 hours.

The walk starts from the village green, in the centre of the village of Beech Hill. Parking is possible alongside the village green, next to the church or in Wood Lane. Please be considerate and do not park on the pavement or grass verges. There are no regular bus services to Beech Hill, so a car or taxi is needed to get to the start. Approximate post code RG7 2BB.

With your back to the church walk down Wood Lane opposite, passing the Memorial Hall and houses. At the end of the straight section, bear left past Beech Hill House (a former country house, now flats, and used by the Red Cross during World War II). Continue past a gate and along the old Swallowfield Road. The old road markings can be seen in places.

Where the road bears right, you will see a bridle path sign and small footbridge. This is the return path, but it can be used to avoid the underpass ahead if it is flooded. Continue on the old road alongside the A33 Swallowfield Bypass, down the slope and underneath the road via the bypass. You will come up a gentle slope on the other side and pass through a gate onto a dead-end road.

Turn right at this road, then right again at the first road junction, next to a large, modern house on the right. As you go down the slope cross a small wooden footbridge on the left into the field, following a footpath sign. Continue on the marked path, with the River Loddon on your right, until you reach a main road next to the Mill House hotel and restaurant.

Cross the road and continue along the marked footpath opposite. The footpath goes through Sheepbridge Court Farm and bears left, running between two fields. At the end of the short track turn right, following a footpath sign and walking alongside old silage holders and some dumped hardcore.

End point: 51.394 lat, -0.974 long

Continue into the next field and keep close to the fence on your right, behind the PV farm. Just after the footpath sign follow the marked path crossing the field to your left, coming out over a stile onto a track between houses. You may spot some alpacas to your right. Walk to the end of the track and short road and emerge onto Hyde End Road.

Turn left on Hyde End Road and walk to the end of the road on the pavement to reach the T-junction. This is the most built-up part of the walk, but it does give a view of the new housing developments as well as the more established part of Spencers Wood. You may find it easier to cross the main road at the T-junction traffic lights immediately in front of you, using the pedestrian controlled button. You will then have to turn left and walk on the grass verge for a short distance. Alternatively, turn left at the lights and stay on the pavement, crossing the road next to blissimi hairdresser. Either way, take the footpath across the field opposite.

On entering the wood on the other side of the field, turn right on the marked path. Very soon turn left and walk along some railway sleepers over boggy ground. Follow the marked path, that runs along the side of the wood and a field. You will eventually pass a gate and some mobile homes, before reaching a quiet crossroads. Follow Yew Tree Lane opposite to the end of the road.

On reaching Beech Hill Road, opposite a house called Yaffles, turn right and walk down the hill over the A33 Swallowfield Bypass, staying on the grass verge on the right. At the bottom of the hill, turn left (just after the first house) onto a marked byway. Follow this path through the wood and, just after a pillbox, bear right over a wooden footbridge and back onto the old Swallowfield Road. Bear right and re-trace your route back along this track, right onto Wood Lane and back into Beech Hill where the walk began.
