Howardian Hills Easy Countryside Trails

Howardian Hills AONB has teamed up with iFootpath to create six Easy Countryside Walking Trails, designed to give everyone the chance to enjoy a slice of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Discover the beauty of this charming landscape on hard-surfaced tracks and lanes, with short routes suitable for beginners, wheelchairs, pushchairs or disability buggies. There are stunning views and nature-rich woodlands just waiting to be discovered, and chance for a glimpse of the Kilburn White Horse, Ampleforth Abbey and Byland Abbey.

Covering 204 sq km of the North Yorkshire countryside, the Howardian Hills are a unique and captivating landscape, nestled between the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Wolds and the Vale of York. The area offers well-wooded rolling countryside, patchworks of arable and pasture land, scenic villages and historic country houses with parkland landscapes.

As with much of the British countryside, access can be a real challenge for some people, with stiles, kissing gates, rutted tracks and steep gradients causing barriers to reaching and enjoying the landscape. To help with these challenges, the Howardian Hills AONB has designed six walking trails that give an easier access option. There are no stiles, no kissing gates and no flights of steps. Any width restrictions (such as bridle gates and gaps alongside vehicle barriers) are quantified with an exact measurement and every guide also includes details of the estimated maximum gradients you will face. These carefully planned and documented walking guides mean you can have the confidence to plan your walking trip to suit your own ability.

If you are need to find a Howardian Hills route suitable for a wheelchair, a motorised disability buggy, a pushchair or for people just a little less confident on their feet, there will be a route suitable for you…
