Sussex Hospices Trail Collection

iFootpath has teamed up with Friends of Sussex Hospices to create a trail dedicated to raising awareness of the work of the hospices in Sussex. The Sussex Hospices Trail is a 200 mile (320km) circular long distance path that starts and ends in Chichester. Using existing footpaths and bridleways, the trail guides walkers on an exciting, rewarding and sometimes exhilarating journey around the Sussex countryside. It is the perfect way of experiencing all that Sussex has to offer, from seaside promenades to riverside pastures and tranquil woodlands to the bracing tops of the South Downs. The variety of the route is a real treat and there are lots of landmarks to visit along the way too. If you’ve ever fancied visiting Arundel Castle, Battle Abbey, Brighton’s i360, Glorious Goodwood or Chichester Cathedral then this is a great opportunity to do just that.

To make life easy for walkers, the trail has been split into 26 Parts, each starting and finishing at a point with public transport, meaning that walkers can bite off as much or as little of the trail as suits them, or spread the completion of the trail over a number of weeks or months. Sue Korman, the Project’s Director for Friends of Sussex Hospices, has teamed up with digitalwalking guides business, iFootpath, to give the trail a modern twist. Each of the 26 Trail Parts is published as a comprehensive digital walking guide with turn-by-turn directions, photos, interesting local facts and a live GPS map. Follow the trail using the iFootpath App and you will see your location oGallery FSH volunteers small n the live map as you walk – say goodbye to those wrong turns!

Kathy Gore OBE, Chair of Friends of Sussex Hospices, explains, “We want to create a permanent legacy of our charity to celebrate its 21st year. The trail links the hospice areas and we are hoping to encourage families and walkers to see some of the beautiful scenery Sussex has to offer, whilst raising awareness of the vital role of the hospice movement. Our aim is that the trail will be used for fundraising events or just enjoyed by walkers, who may be remembering a friend or family member they hold dear.”

The trail has been made possible thanks to the generosity of volunteer walkers that have helped to map and document the trail, as well as the trail sponsors who have funded the b2ap3 small Holding SHT Logo Smallproject. Each part of the trail has been sponsored by an individual or family from Sussex, many of whom have personally experienced the amazing work of the various hospice providers of Sussex and are dedicating their own stretch of the trail to the memory of a loved one. Read the stories and dedications of these sponsors.

So why not don your boots and get walking? Walkers are asked to consider making a small donation to Friends of Sussex Hospices after completing any of the trail parts. If you want to donate £5 to support the work of the Sussex hospice providers, you can do this by texting SHTR16 £5 to 70070. Find out more about the Sussex Hospices Trail and how to donate
